1) Five little ducklings go for a walk with their mother but spot a strange animal with a long nose behind some garden pots.
2) It turns out to be a fox. The mother duck pretends to believe the fox's claim that he is a duck like them.
3) The mother duck leads the ducklings into the river, knowing that the fox cannot swim unlike ducks. When the fox follows, he falls into the water and is unable to keep up with the swimming ducklings and mother duck.

Point to the nose sticking out behind the garden pots. Ask the children what kind of animal they think the nose belongs to. You may need to talk about what animals they know that have long noses and make a list.
There go the ducklings…
Point out that it was a fox.
"Wait!" says Mama…
Do you think Mama duck knows that he is a fox?
"But of course!" says the…
Does it look like Mama duck believes the fox? (Point out her face if needed). How do the ducklings feel about the fox? (Scared, they are hiding in Mama's wings).
So Mama says, "Well…
Does Mama duck look happy or mad? How do you know?
Then Mama leads…
What is Mama duck thinking about? Is Mama duck happy or mad?
"Look!" says Mama…
Now the very hairy stranger…
What is the fox thinking about? How do you know? (Point out where he is looking and that he is smacking his lips). Is Mama duck happy or mad?
But Mama turns and…
How is the fox feeling? How is Mama duck feeling?
"Yes, I am!" says…

So Mama says…

Make a guess. What do you think will happen to the fox? Do you think he can swim?
Down go the ducklings…
Look at the fox's face. How is he feeling now? (surprised, shocked)
So where are all the…
How does Mama duck feel now? Why do you think she is happy?
But where's the very…
Where is the fox? (on the bridge).
"Well," says Mama…
Mama says that she knew that he was no duck. What clues were in the story that Mama knew? (This can be tough so you may need to point out again that she always looked mad and kept her eyes looking at the fox. You may also want to draw a picture of the duck with a thought bubble and draw a picture of a fox not able to swim. You can talk about how the duck knew this about the fox and that is why she took the ducklings to the water. This is also part of why she smiled as her ducklings were plopped back up out of the water).
