Lesson: Visualizing and Describing Solid Figures; and Making Models of

Different Solid Figures

I. Background Information for Learners

This lesson is all about visualizing and describing a solid figure and in making models of
different solid figures like cube, prism, pyramid, cylinder, cone and sphere using a plane figure.

The basic solid figures are cube, prism, pyramid, cylinder, cone and sphere.

Solid figures are three dimensional figures. Three dimensional objects have length, width and height.
Moreover, they have faces, edges and vertices

Edge A face is the flat surface of a solid figure.

An edge is formed when two faces met. It
is a straight line segment.
Vertex
A vertex (plural: vertices) is a point where
edges met.

Faces

Solid figures are either polyhedrons or non-polyhedrons. Plural: Polyhedra / Polyhedrons

Polyhedron Non-polyhedron

a solid whose faces are polygons a solid whose faces are not all polygons

Examples of Polyhedrons

Triangular pyramid Rectangular pyramid Pentagonal pyramid

Examples of non-polyhedrons

A cylinder is a solid with A cone is a solid with a circular A sphere is a set of point space

faces, edges, or vertices

We can make solid figures by using nets. Net is a pattern that you can cut and fold to make a model
of a solid figure.
