INTRODUCTION - THE MV SEWOL SHIP DISASTER

In 2014 on 15 april the MV Sewol Ship Disaster took place in sewol of South Korea ,
enroute from Incheon to Jeju that was around 13 hours sail. MV Sewol was built by a
Japanese company in 1994 owned by Chonghaejin Marine Co Ltd. and weighed 6,825
tonnes . The ship was commanded by 69 year old captain Lee Joon-Seok who was called
as a replacement for the regular captain . The ferry carried around 476 people, mostly
students from Danwon High School . As per the investigators the possible cause of sink
was structurally unsound model and the probable speed at that time. Also the ship carried
2000 tonnes of cargo which exceeded the limit that was 987 tonnes. Many parties were
held responsible for the disaster that included the Government ,South Korean Coast
Guard ,Captain along with three other Crew Members. Later on 15 may captain with
three other crew members were charged with murder. The sinking of Sewol received a
widespread huge social and political reaction within the country .
