EARLY LIFE AND STRUGGLE

Life wasn’t always hunky dory for
this man. He was only 7 years old
when his father, P Gopal, a barber
in Bangalore, died. All he left
behind was a barber shop: little did he know that his son
would become a billionaire even before he turned 40.

m
er as
With her husband no more, Ramesh Babu’s

co
eH w
mother had to work as a cook to help feed her children.

o.
rs e
Since she couldn’t run the barber shop, she rented
ou urc
it out for Rs 5 a day. His father had left behind a saloon
o
aC s

business on Brigade road which his uncle took to

vi y re

running. He gives them five rupees a day from that.

ed d

Ramesh Babu took up different odd jobs to make a

ar stu

little extra money. He started part-time newspaper

is

delivery work, milk bottles supplying and whatever else

Th

was convenient to support his family at the age of 13.

sh

He continued his studies while supporting his

family. Somehow, he finished his tenth standard study.

TURNING POINT
Sometime in the nineties, when he
was in my first PU, his mother
had a bitter fight with his uncle.
His uncle had simply stopped
paying them any money. He told mother that he should
take over the saloon and run it myself.

m
er as
She was adamant that he prioritize education,

co
eH w
but he started working at the saloon too and learning

o.
rs e
the ropes of the business.
ou urc
In the mornings, he would be at the saloon and
o
aC s

evenings at college. Then again at night he would return

vi y re

to the saloon, which would remain open till 1 in the

ed d

morning. Since then he have been called a barber.

ar stu

He then decided to run it himself and in 1989, he

is

began working at the salon that had first been

Th

established by his grandfather.

sh

He has now one son and two daughters.

STARTING HIS BUSINESS

Working at the shop which he
later named as Inner Space, he
always dreamt of owning a car. So
he purchased a Maruti Omni and started renting it
out. What began as a passion soon translated into an

m
enormously successful car-rental business.

er as
co
eH w
In 2004, he got into the luxury car rental and self-

o.
rs e
drive business after the government opened up the
ou urc
tourism sector. Ramesh Tours and Travels hasn’t looked
o

back since.
aC s
vi y re

Since then, there has been no stopping Ramesh.

ed d

From B-town stars to politicians, everyone has travelled

ar stu

in his cars. “He have had plenty of clients and thus, his
is

cars have been used by many big names. From

Th

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan to Amitabh Bachchan to SRK,

mostly everyone has been driven around in his cars.”

BREAKTHROUGH IDEA
He wanted to do something,
so he planned to buy a car.
He also always dreamt of
owning a car and passionate
about fancy cars. In 1993, He bought a used Maruti Van

m
(Omni) car from his little savings and own hard-earned

er as
co
money with the help of his uncle, calls him a Baba.
eH w
o.
rs e
To get a loan, his grandfather had to mortgage his
ou urc
family house to enable the car loan. He got a car loan
o

from the Karnataka State Finance Corporation, which

aC s
vi y re

was the only bank, which is to give loans those days

after buying the car and he thought to keep it for his
ed d
ar stu

first self-use.
The EMI was about 6,800 and he knew that as a
is
Th

barber, he could earn a monthly ten thousand or twenty

thousand. It was not sufficient to pay the EMI.
