Information Sheet 2.3-1
Conduct proper hole-digging

Learning Objectives:
After reading this INFORMATION SHEET, YOU MUST be able to:
1. Identify the proper hole-digging based on crop requirement
2. Dig holes
3. Explain the importance of proper hole digging

HOLE-DIGGING
Digging the hole sounds easy
enough, but incorrect sizing or spacing
of planting holes puts your garden's
health at risk. A hole that is too deep
means your plant crown dips below the
soil line, which may hurt growth. A
shallow hole doesn't give the roots
enough space to grow and may result in
exposed roots or a wobbly plant without
the support of the soil. Knowing where
and how to dig holes for your plants
gets your garden off to a strong start.
Steps in digging hole for planting:

1. Choose a digging tool that fits the job. If you're digging a hole for a
small tomato seedling, a small garden trowel does the trick. If you're
planting a shrub or tree, a larger shovel or spade works best to dig a
larger, deeper hole.
2. Mark the spots for the holes. If you're digging holes for several
plants, determine the spacing you need between plants, which varies
based on the type. Small plants, such as lettuce or marigolds, may
need only a few inches between plants, while trees need several feet.
Refer to the plant tag for spacing specifics.
3. Inspect the root ball of the plant to get an idea of how large you need
to make the hole.
The width and the depth of the hole should be large enough so that
the roots can spread out in their natural growth pattern. As a general
rule, the crown should be at the soil line. The hole should allow the
plant to sit at the same level in the soil as it was previously.
4. Position the trowel, shovel or spade in the location of the hole. Dig
down and remove the soil in the area to the approximate size needed.

5. Remove any rocks you dig up in the area. Break up dirt clumps
remaining in the hole to avoid air pockets during planting.
6. Place the plant in the hole to check on the size. Spread out the roots
as you would for planting. Make adjustments to the hole. Add more
soil if it is too deep. Dig out more soil if it is too shallow.

Importance of Proper Hole-Digging in Planting Crops

 It breaks the soil

 It makes the soil light enough for plants and flowers to grow.

Table 1 - Planting distance of various fruit, vegetable and plantation

crops

Note:
- Planting distance will also depend on other factors.
- Entries like “2.0m” and “4.0-6.0 m” indicate square planting
- Entries like”0.75 x 0.10 m” indicate a planting system other than a
square.

TASK SHEET 2.3-1
Title: How to conduct proper hole-digging for
planting crop
Performance Objective: Given the necessary material like spade,
garden trowel, shovel or hole-digger you should
be able to conduct proper hole-digging following
the proper steps/procedure.

Supplies/Materials : hoe, spade, garden trowel, shovel, or hole-

digger

Steps/Procedure:
Using the most common farm tools and materials such as spade, garden
trowel, shovel or hole digger, the following are the steps for a proper hole
digging

1. Choose a digging tool that fits the job.

If you're digging a hole for a small tomato seedling, a small garden

trowel does the trick. If you're planting a shrub or tree, a larger shovel
or spade works best to dig a larger, deeper hole.

2. Mark the spots for the holes.

If you're digging holes for several plants, determine the spacing you
need between plants, which varies based on the type. Small plants,
such as lettuce or marigolds, may need only a few inches between
plants, while trees need several feet. Refer to the plant tag for spacing
specifics.

3. Inspect the root ball of the plant to get an idea of how large
you need to make the hole.

The width and the depth of the hole should be large enough so that the
roots can spread out in their natural growth pattern. As a general rule,
the crown should be at the soil line. The hole should allow the plant to
sit at the same level in the soil as it was previously.

4. Position the trowel, shovel or spade in the location of the

hole and dig down and remove the soil in the area to the
approximate size needed.

5. Remove any rocks you dig up in the area. Break up dirt
clumps remaining in the hole to avoid air pockets during
planting.
6. Place the plant in the hole to check on the size.

Spread out the roots as you would for planting. Make adjustments to
the hole. Add more soil if it is too deep. Dig out more soil if it is too
shallow.

Basal fertilization, also known as pre-planting fertilization, has the main
purpose to increase soils biological fertility and concentration of mineral
elements, providing big quantities of lacking nutrients.

Thanks to basal fertilization it is possible to create the agronomic

basis necessary for the correct implementation of plants production.

It differs from the usual fertilization for its extraordinary application.

Generally, it is carried out:

 Only once before the cultivation of a soil for herbaceous crops;

 Before planting a woody crop
(grape, fruit and olive trees).

Basal fertilization guarantees good

results of multi-year crops such as fruit
trees, while in case of crops in a
protected environment, it is better to
limit this type of measure because all
greenhouses have drip or sprinkling
water distribution systems,
so fertigation can be effectively used.

Dosage in Basal Fertilization

The dosage in basal fertilizations varies according to the results provided by
a chemical-physical analysis of the soil concerning: nutrients supply, bulk
density, texture, pH, total and active limestone, electrical conductivity,
organic substance, Cation-exchange capacity (CEC), total nitrogen,
assimilable phosphorus and exchangeable potassium.

How Basal Fertilization Occurs.

This type of fertilization consists in the distribution of slow-release
nutrients, which are gradually introduced during the agricultural cycle of
crops. Usually, phosphate, potassic and organic fertilizers are used.
The guidelines in a given context may change according to the nutrients,
especially in relation to their mobility in the soil:

 Nitrogen is the main macronutrient for crops and it is very mobile,

both in soil and plants.
For this reason, its application before transplanting in open field crops

is strongly discouraged and must be minimized in protected crops
(max 10% of total removals).
 Phosphorus is an element with low mobility, which stimulates the
development of new roots and it is suitable for pre-planting
fertilization.
 Potassium is not very mobile in soil too and it’s particularly suitable
for basal fertilizations. It is the element that improves fruits quality
and, thus, its supply is recommended during their ripening.

Basal fertilizer application technique

1. Dig the ground around 6-10 cm deep (depends on the crop

requirements).
2. Measure out the granulized fertilizer around 6-10 gram of inorganic
fertilizer with a ratio of 10-20-20 or 15-15-15. This helps plant for
its root development.
3. Pour the fertilizer inside the hole.
4. Cover the hole with soil.
5. Plant the seed on the top of the covered hole/soil (for the seedling,
do not plant it on the top of the covered hole instead give little
space between them).

Instructions: THANK YOU.
This Trainees’ Record Book (TRB) is intended to serve
as record of all accomplishment/task/activities while
undergoing training in the industry. It will eventually become
evidence that can be submitted for portfolio assessment and
for whatever purpose it will serve you. It is therefore
important that all its contents are viably entered by both the NOTES:
trainees and instructor.
The Trainees’ Record Book contains all the required
competencies in your chosen qualification. All you have to do
is to fill in the column “Task required” and “Date
Accomplished” with all the activities in accordance with the
training program and to be taken up in the school and with
the guidance of the instructor. The instructor will likewise
indicate his/her remarks on the “Instructors Remarks”
column regarding the outcome of the task accomplished by
the trainees. Be sure that the trainee will personally
accomplish the task and confirmed by the instructor.
It is of great importance that the content should be
written legibly on ink. Avoid any corrections or erasures and
maintain the cleanliness of this record.
This will be collected by your trainer and submit the
same to the Vocational Instruction Supervisor (VIS) and shall
form part of the permanent trainee’s document on file.
