PREPARED BY: ROSSANO C. SAMSON

UNIT 2
LESSON 1
TOPIC Roles of ICT in 21ST Teacher Education

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the lesson the students will be able to:
- Define what is ICT
- Identify the forms of ICT
- Identify the Roles of ICT in 21ST Teacher Education

WHAT IS ICT?

- The term ICT simplified means any technology that has to do with information and
communication.
- Information can come in many forms such as sound, video, text, and images, so when you
think of what technology it is available that produces these aspects of information and
sometimes a combination of all these, we refer to such technology as mobile phones,
digital cameras, video cameras for example.
- Today information and communication technologies are the one thing and so the
repertoire of technologies expands further to encompass computers and computer-related
products, email, MMS, and other forms of communication (Finger et al., 2007).
- ICT encompasses both the internet-enabled sphere as well as the mobile one powered
by wireless networks. It also includes antiquated technologies, such as landline
telephones, radio and television broadcast -- all of which are still widely used today
alongside cutting-edge ICT pieces such as artificial intelligence and robotics.
- ICT is sometimes used synonymously with IT (for information technology); however, ICT
is generally used to represent a broader, more comprehensive list of all components
related to computer and digital technologies than IT.
- The list of ICT components is exhaustive, and it continues to grow. Some components,
such as computers and telephones, have existed for decades. Others, such as
smartphones, digital TVs and robots, are more recent entries.

FORMS OF ICT

ICT (Information and Communication Technology) is referred to as a part of learning – teaching

process: one as a "tool" and the other as a "medium" and the third element as "goal".

First form: it is often used for organizations, management and schools;

Second form: this form does not constitute ICT relating to learning process; however using it
supports learning in the classroom. An example of the application of ICT is directed at the

organization and management in a student oriented supervision system

Third form: the application of IT appears as a goal in such special lessons including computer
education along with informatics. In this part, students get acquainted with the most important
information technological inputs and outputs which are a major phenomenon hidden in the
community and the aim of education is to avoid illiteracy of computers.

ROLE OF ICT IN 21ST CENTURY’S TEACHER EDUCATION:

- ICT helps teachers in both pre-service and in-Service teachers training.

- ICT helps teachers to interact with students.
- It helps them in preparation their teaching, provide feedback.
- It helps in improve Teaching skill, helps in innovative Teaching.
- It helps in effectiveness of classroom.
- It also helps in improving professional Development and Educational management as well
as enhances Active Learning of teacher Trainees.
- It is now replacing the ancient technology. As we know now-a day‟s students are always
have competitive mind. So teacher must have the knowledge of the subject. This can be
done through ICT.
- ICT helps teachers in preparation for teaching. In order to introduce ICT in pre-service
teacher education different methods and strategies are applied. Different tools are used
such as word processing, Spreadsheet etc. Various technology based plans are used to
help the teachers for their practice teaching.
- ICT as a medium for teaching and learning. It is a tool for teaching and learning itself, the
medium through which teachers can teach and learners can learn. It appears in many
different forms, such as drill and practice exercises, in simulations and educational
networks.
- ICT helps Teacher to communicate properly with their students. So ICT bridge the gap
between teacher and students.
- ICT helps Teacher to pass information to students within a very little time.
- ICT helps Teacher to design educational environment.
- ICT helps Teacher to identify creative child in educational institute
- It is also helping Teacher for their personnel support (knowledge, attitude, skills).

Teaching occupies an honorable position in the society. ICT helps the teacher to update the new
knowledge, skills to use the new digital tools and resources. By using and acquire the knowledge
of ICT, student teacher will become effective teachers. ICT is one of the major factors for
producing the rapid changes in our society. It can change the nature of education and roles of
students and teacher in teaching learning process.
