LESSON 1
TOPIC Roles of ICT in 21ST Teacher Education
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the lesson the students will be able to:
- Define what is ICT
- Identify the forms of ICT
- Identify the Roles of ICT in 21ST Teacher Education
WHAT IS ICT?
- The term ICT simplified means any technology that has to do with information and
communication.
- Information can come in many forms such as sound, video, text, and images, so when you
think of what technology it is available that produces these aspects of information and
sometimes a combination of all these, we refer to such technology as mobile phones,
digital cameras, video cameras for example.
- Today information and communication technologies are the one thing and so the
repertoire of technologies expands further to encompass computers and computer-related
products, email, MMS, and other forms of communication (Finger et al., 2007).
- ICT encompasses both the internet-enabled sphere as well as the mobile one powered
by wireless networks. It also includes antiquated technologies, such as landline
telephones, radio and television broadcast -- all of which are still widely used today
alongside cutting-edge ICT pieces such as artificial intelligence and robotics.
- ICT is sometimes used synonymously with IT (for information technology); however, ICT
is generally used to represent a broader, more comprehensive list of all components
related to computer and digital technologies than IT.
- The list of ICT components is exhaustive, and it continues to grow. Some components,
such as computers and telephones, have existed for decades. Others, such as
smartphones, digital TVs and robots, are more recent entries.
FORMS OF ICT
Second form: this form does not constitute ICT relating to learning process; however using it
supports learning in the classroom. An example of the application of ICT is directed at the

Third form: the application of IT appears as a goal in such special lessons including computer
education along with informatics. In this part, students get acquainted with the most important
information technological inputs and outputs which are a major phenomenon hidden in the
community and the aim of education is to avoid illiteracy of computers.
Teaching occupies an honorable position in the society. ICT helps the teacher to update the new
knowledge, skills to use the new digital tools and resources. By using and acquire the knowledge
of ICT, student teacher will become effective teachers. ICT is one of the major factors for
producing the rapid changes in our society. It can change the nature of education and roles of
students and teacher in teaching learning process.
