SBA Oral Presentation

This is a personal response to the selected issue/topic/theme or event. It should

be delivered orally for 3-5 minutes. The oral presentation should be delivered
predominantly in standard English and in the genre of the student's choosing. For
example, the presentation may be in the form of poetry, prose, a speech, an
argument, a role play, drama, or an exposition.
The student should begin his/her oral presentation by delivering a brief overview
of the presentation including the genre chosen, the sources used and a comment on
the kind of language used.
A brief plan of the oral presentation must be submitted in the student's individual
SBA portfolio. This plan should include: the topic, genre, sources, language
devices used, main idea (what conclusion did you arrive at based on your
research), aids to be used.

Tips to improve your oral presentation

1) Research your audience- gender, age, level of education, social class,
location, religion, general culture of your audience. Use this information in
your oral presentation to bond with your audience and more effectively
communicate with them.
2) Select an appropriate mode for your individual personal response. This can
be poetry, drama, short story, exposition, argument or a letter. In selecting
the mode of presentation, choose the one that you are most comfortable
with, is most appropriate for your purpose and is most appropriate for your
audience.
3) Select appropriate aids to improve your presentation. Oral presentations can
be improved with props, costumes, pictures, power point, etc. Select the
one(s) you are most comfortable with, and which complement your selected
mode. The aids should also appeal to your audience. Remember that your
physical appearance is also an aid so dress and look the part.
4) Before the date of your graded presentation, practice and prepare. You may
enlist feedback from your group members. It would be helpful to make a
tape of your performance and listen for mistakes in pronunciation,
enunciation, subject-verb agreement, pacing, etc. Practice movements to
ensure they are not distracting or mechanical.
5) Be authentic and natural when you are presenting. Try not to look too
rehearsed or as if you are trying to remember rather than deliver. Pace
yourself, project your voice: remember the aim is to communicate. Make eye
contact, use up the stage. Note time limits. Note your audience’s response.
Be confident!
