Directly proportional: as one amount increases, another amount

increases at the same rate.

The symbol for "directly proportional" is ∝

(Don't confuse it with the symbol for infinity ∞)

The "constant of proportionality" is the value that relates the two amounts

This can be written:

y = kx

Where k is the constant of proportionality

When we know the constant of proportionality we can then answer other questions

Inversely Proportional: when one value decreases at the same rate that the other
increases.

This: y is inversely proportional to x

Is the same thing as: y is directly proportional to 1/x

 k
Which can be written: y=
 x
