1 Fiat CODE control unit 2. Ignition switch with ael1iiialll 3- Fuel injection controJ unit
The Fiat CODE system enables operation of the electronic fuel injection control unit by means of an ex-
change of codes.
When the ignition is on (+15), the fuel injection control unit sends a code request to the Fiat CODE
control unit. The latter responds and sends a secret code, but only after recognizing (via the aerial) a
known electronic key entered in the ignition switch.
After recognizing the code, the fuel injection control unit starts electronic management of the engine.
The fuel injection control unit can store the secret code in memory only by means of a special procedure.

2. Ignition switch with built-in aerial A O.R.1 Radio waves for activating the transponder
3. Fiat CODE control unit O.R.2 Radio waves for sending the key's se-
cret code
During fault diagnosis,before replacing the fuel injection control unit, makesure that the com-
ponent under examinationreally is faulty, since when the new fuel injection control unit is sup-
plied, the Master Code is stored in memory,rendering it totally unusableon other cars.
On request from the fuel injection control unit, the Fiat CODE sends the latter the following:
- the master code, enabling operation and management of the engine;
- the diagnosis code (key not recognized), preventing engine operation.
With the ignition on (+15), the electronic key control unit has to recognize the electronic key with its
relevantcode; there will be two possibilities: .
- recognition of the code by the Fiat CODEcontrol unit, the fuel injection control unit enablesengine
operation (CODE warning light goes out);
- if the code recognition is negative, the Fiat CODE control unit will send a code to the fuel injection
control unit which will not permit engine operation (CODE warning light is on permanently).

Electronic keys
The key handle contains a transponder, an electronic device NOT supplied by the battery which effects
transmission by ether.
When the key is inserted in the ignition switch, the transponder is energized by the aerial by means of ra-
dio waves, and automatically responds by emitting a code.
The car is delivered to the user with 4 keys:
- 1 RED electronic key (Master key);
- 2 electronic keys (main keys);
- 1 garage electronic key (secondary key, only permits starting).
Each key contains a transponder with a secret code. The RED key contains the Master Code and must
ON LY be used for the key memorization procedure.
The RED key's code is the Master Code memorized in the fuel injection control unit and the Fiat CODE
control unit; this renders the fuel injection control unit and the RED key inseparably linked. If the RED
key is lost or damaged, no further procedures for the memorization of new keys are permitted; a subse-
quent fault to the Fiat CODE control unit will render it necessary, in the absence of the RED key, to re-
place the Fiat CODE control unit and fuel injection control unit.
The owner of the car is advised to adhere STRICTL Y to the following instructions.
the RED key must be stored in a safe place (not in the car);
the RED key must be used only for memorizing new keys;
the Code Card with the secret code must not be left in the car, to avoid theft, but at the same
time it must be available for the emergency start-up procedure;
the RED key is a symbol of ownership of the car; if the vehicle is sold, the RED key and Code
Card must be handed over to the new owner.
P3W049LO1
Aerial
The purpose of the aerial is:
- to supply energy to the transponder for sending the code;
- to receive the code from the transponder and send it to the Fiat CODE control unit.
Since the aerial needs to be close to the transponder (because of electromagnetic immunity, its small
size and the limited range of action of the transponder), it is mounted coaxially on the ignition switch.
Code Card
This card contains:
- electronic Code, 5-digit code for the emergency start-up procedure using the Fiat Lancia Tester or ac-
celerator pedal;
- mechanical Code, if the mechanical part of the key needs to be duplicated.
On the back of the card there are two spaces on which any remote controls' self-adhesive labels with the
transmitter code (password) should be applied.
Fiat CODE system warning light
- ON: if the warning light is permanently on when the ignition is on (+15), this indicates one of the fol-
lowing faults:
a. key not recognized by the Fiat CODE control unit (engine management disabled);
b. serial line not connected or the fuel injection and Fiat CODE control units have not succeeded in
communicating with each other;
c. key rememorization procedure has not not been carried out correctly.
If the CODE warning light comes on temporarily or permanently while driving or starting the
car, this does hot necessarily mean a fault in the system, but in some cases indicates that a con-
dition has arisen that may be interpreted as a tampering attempt by a thief.
If this situation arises,to carry out a proper test on the system,stop the car, switch off the en-
gine and switch off the ignition. Switch the ignition on again: the CODEwarning light should
come on and then go out after about 1 second.
If the CODE warning light stays on after this procedure, repeat the operation, waiting for over
30 seconds while the ignition is off. If after this attempt the Code warning light stays on perma-
nently when the ignition is on, carry out a fault diagnosis on the Fiat CODE system.
KEY MEMORIZATION
Before starting this procedure,make sure that the Fiat CODEcontrol unit really is unused.If a
Fiat CODE control unit is faulty or alreadymemorized,this will lead to the irreversiblememo-
rization of an incorrect code in the fuel injection control unit which will not be able to be used
in the future on other cars.
The key memorization procedure is divided into two stages in sequence:
1. the secret code of the electronic keys is memorized in the Fiat CODE control unit;
2. the Fiat CODE control unit manages the memorization of the master code in the fuel injection control
unit (when the latter is unused).
This second step is done automatically when the first has been completed successfully, when the ig-
nition is switched on again (+15).
The procedure permits the memorization of up to a maximum of 8 and minimum of 3 different keys.
The memorization procedure can only be carried out after the test conducted by the control unit ensures
that everything is properly connected and working (universal code active and so car not protected).
The presence of the universal code can be checked by the flashing of the Code warning light, which has
a frequency of 1.6 Hz and an operating cycle (duty cycle) of 50%. This flashing starts 2.5 seconds after
the ignition has been switched on (+15); after this check, the memorization procedure can be com-
menced.

The key memorizationprocedureon an unused system is not successful in the following cases:
- a key is insertedfor 2 consecutivetimes;
- the same key 1Sinserted 2 or more times between 2 insertions of a RED key;
- a stage with the key at the ignition ON position (+15) lasts longer than 2 seconds;
- a stage with the key at the STOP position lasts longer than 10 seconds.
On completion of memorization, make sure that all the keys supplied with the car start the engine; if one
of the keys does not start the engine, repeat the key memorization procedure.
NOTE Thememorizationprocedurehas been describedfor 3 keys (including the REDkey), but must be
applied to all the keys supplied with the car, plus any additional keys.
If the procedure has not been carried out correctly, the memorization procedure must be repeated
meticulously.
If for any reason and at any time during the key memorization procedure a mistake is considered to
have been made, turn the key to the ON position (+15) for over 2 s or to the STOP position for over 10
s, then start the key memorization procedure again.

tion.
Key memorization with UNUSED Fiat CODE control unit and USED fuel injection control unit
For the key memorization procedure on an unused Fiat CODE control unit and used fuel injection con-
trol unit, follow the instructions given in the "key memorization with unused system" sub-section above.
Key memorization with used Fiat CODE and fuel injection control units
This procedure is necessary if further keys need to be memorized or the set of keys has to be reset follow-
ing a replacement of the notches. The procedure permits memorization of a maximum of 8 and a mini-
mum of 2 different keys (including the red key).
To avoid errorsin the key memorizationprocedure,you are advisedto carefully read the proce-
dure describedon the next page, before carrying it out on the car.

Key memorization with USED Fiat CODE control unit and UNUSED fuel injection control
unit
If the fuel injection control unit has to be replaced, the Master Code in it has to be memorized.
To memorize the Master Code in the fuel injection control unit, simply turn a key to the ignition ON posi-
tion (+15), after checking that the Fiat CODE control unit is working properly.
MANUAL DIAGNOSIS
When the CODE warning light stays on permanently with the ignition on (+15), the problems may be as
follows:
- key not recognized by the Fiat CODE control unit;
- serial line not connected;
- key rememorization procedure not followed correctly (procedure interrupted)
Unused system and ignition on
An unused system means that the car has a fuel injection control unit and Fiat CODE control unit which
do NOT have a memorized code (for example after an intervention which has required the replacement
of both control units). In this case, when the ignition is switched on, the CODE warning light may indi-
cate one of the following conditions, also illustrated in the diagram below:
a. When the CODE warning light comes on for 0.7 s and after about 2 seconds it starts flashing, every-
thing is properly connected and working, the car is not protected and the universal code is active.
b. When the CODE warning light flashes with code 1 (1 flash, pause, 1 flash, etc.), this means that the
serial line is not connected or that the two control units have not succeeded in communicating with
each other.
c. When the CODE warning light flashes with code 2 (2 flahses, pause, 2 flashes, etc.), this means one
of the following conditions:
- aerial faulty;
- transponder faulty;
- transponder absent;
- the fuel injection control unit has received an incorrect code.
P3WO58LO1
In the case of a car with unused Fiat CODE control unit and used fuel injection control unit, if the CODE
warning light comes on permanently when the ignition is switched on, this indicates one of the follow-
ing problems:
- aerial faulty;
- transponder faulty;
- transponder absent.
The Fiat CODE system does not have its own diagnostic socket; to check that the system is working, a
fault diagnosis must be conducted on the electronic fuel injection - ignition control unit.
The Fiat Lancia Tester can detect the following:
Parameters
- STARTING PERMITTED/NOT PERMITTED
This indicates that the fuel injection control unit has recongized the code, permitting engine starting.
- PROGRAMMED/UNPROGRAMMED STATE OF ELECTRONIC KEY
The UNPROGRAMMED message means that both fuel injection and Fiat CODE control units are un-
used (no codes memorized).
Error
- ELECTRONIC KEY ERROR
P3W16ALO1
The diagram shows the actions on the accelerator pedal and the ignition of the fuel injection warning
light relating to an example code 42173 (Electronic Code)
This procedure allows the engine to be started only once, but can be repeated an unlimited number of
times.
After the code has been acquiredi the electronic controfunitpermits engine starting for 10 min-
utcs, after which it returns to the starting inhibition state.
INSTRUCTIONS CONCERNING THE REPLACEMENT OF THE COMPONENTS OF THE
FIAT CODE SYSTEM
The Fiat CODE system consists of various components connected to each other; care must be taken
when one of these parts is worked on and replaced.
Electronic fuel injection control unit
Underno circumstancesmay fuel injection control units be exchangedbetween carsin order to
check-theirefficiency.
During fault diagnosis,beforereplacing the fuel injection control unit, makesure that the com-
ponent under examinationreally is faulty, since when the new fuel injection control unit is sup-
plied, the Master Code is stored in memory,rendering it totally unusableon other cars.

the car.
Transponder
Under no circumstancesmay the key transponderbe handled,replacedor exchanged(except
for replacing the notch kit and new keys, limited to the RED key).
Adding a new key to the four keys supplied with the car
Adding a new key involves the rememorizationof all the existing keys supplied with the car, as
keys not used during this procedure are deletedfrom memory.
