THE ELVES AND THE SHOEMAKER

1. There is a shoemaker.
2. He lives with his wife.
3. He is poor but honest.
4. They are a happy couple.
5. The shoemaker makes very nice shoes.
6. He has only one more piece of leather left.
7. His wife says, `Oh dear! What can we do?
We have no more grains, no more wood
and no more leather left.’
8. The shoemaker replies, `Don’t worry,
darling.’
9. They go to bed.
10. The next morning, the shoemaker wakes
up early.
11. He goes to his workbench to make the
shoes.
12. To his surprise, he sees a beautiful pair of
shoes on his workbench.
13. He and his wife are surprised and happy.
14. They look at the shoes.
15. `The shoes are very well made,’ the
shoemaker’s wife says.
16. The shoemaker puts the pair of shoes on
his display cupboard.
17. A wealthy man comes to buy the shoes
and pays him a lot of money.
18. The shoemakers buys a bigger piece of
leather.
19. He cuts out two pieces to make two pairs
of shoes.
20. Again, they go to bed.
21. The next morning, the same thing
happens.
22. The two pairs of shoes look more
beautiful than the first pair.
23. Again, a wealthy man comes to buy the
shoes.
24. This goes on until the shoemaker and his
wife become rich.
25. They want to find out who has helped to
make the shoes.
26. They hide behind the curtains.
27. They see two elves enter the room.
28. The elves wear tight and torn clothes.
29. They don’t wear any shoes.
30. They start making shoes.
31. They work hard.
32. When they finish, they leave the house
through the window.
33. The shoemaker and his wife want to thank
the elves.
34. They make clothes and shoes for the
elves.
35. They put them on the workbench.
36. The elves come again at night.
37. This time, they see the clothes and shoes.
38. They put them on happily.
39. They are never seen again.
40. The shoemaker and his wife are rich and
happy now.
