A Walk in the Woods

Overview – Autumn is the time for taking a relaxing hike in the woods and seeing all the beauty that nature has to offer. In A Walk in the
Woods, players take the best path to see as many features as possible and score the most points. The game takes 15-30 minutes and is for 1-10
players.
Components
- 1 player sheet per player – make sure all players use the same side
- 3 dice (1 green, 1 yellow, 1 red)
How to Play
Each round complete these steps:
1. Select Dice. One player rolls all three dice. Each player selects two of the three dice and the sum of those dice is used to determine which
shape can be added to their path.
2. Add to Path. Once a shape is selected, the player adds this new path to the end of their existing path. The shape may be rotated any way the
player wishes, and the mirror image of the shape may be used in any rotation as well. One of the ends of the new path must be orthogonally
adjacent to the end of the current path. The new path may not cover any of the black squares on the player sheet and it may not cover the
existing path. If a player cannot or chooses not to place one of the available shapes, they may instead add a single block to the end of their
path and forego any bonus (see step 4) for the round. In the examples below, the dark grey blocks are the existing path and the light grey
blocks are the new path. Examples 3 & 4 are not valid since one end of the new path is not orthogonally adjacent to the end of the current
path.

3. Mark off features. Any features that are covered by the new path are marked at the bottom of the player’s sheet.
4. Fill in a bonus. After each player selects two dice to use for the new path, there will be 1 die left over for each player.Fill in 1 side of the
top most incomplete shape on the Bonuses section of the player sheet that matches the color of that die. When all sides are filled in, the
player gets a special power they can use on any future turn. When the power is used, put an X through the shape.
a. Green – Use any shape you wish from the 6 available – ignore the totals rolled on the two selected dice. The player may still take
a bonus with the left over die on the turn that this power is used.
b. Yellow – Use the shape selected on your turn to add as a side trail off any point of your existing path. This is done in addition to
adding the shape to the end of your path.
c. Red – Completed red bonus squares count as points at the end of the game.
5. Start a new round.
First Round – On the first round the new path selected must start from one of the 6 squares next to Start.
Game End – The game ends on the round when 1 or more players extend their path to or past one of the 6 ending Finish squares. A portion of the
new path is allowed to go past the final 6 squares.
Scoring
Add up the points for each feature to determine the winner.
1. Leaves – Each leaf is worth the number of points indicated.
2. Deer – Score the number of points indicated based on how many deer have been marked off.
3. Flowers – The player who has marked off the most flowers scores 16, 2nd place is 8, and 3rd place is 4.In the event of a tie, the points are
combined and split between the players rounded down. For instance if two players tie for first they would receive 12 points each.
a. In a 2-player game, assume there is an automated third player that always gets 8 flowers. Thus if 1 player gets 10 flowers and the
other player gets 6 flowers, the first player would get 16 points and the second player would get 4 points.
4. Red Bonus – Score points for each completed red bonus square.
5. Finish – All players who reach the finish on the final round score 10 points.

Solo Play
A Walk in the Woods can be played solo with these small modifications.
- At the end of each round, fill in 1 of the dots under the “Solo” heading. The game ends when the player has reached the finish, or all dots have
been filled in.
- The player only scores the 10 bonus points for finishing if they reach the finish by the final round.
- For flower scoring, it is assumed that there are two automated players that always score 8 & 6 flowers.
Thus, if the player has 7 flowers, they
nd
would get the points for 2 place.
Solo Scoring
- < 50 points – You finish your walk covered in ticks and mosquito bites. You twisted your ankle and every step was worse than the last. And
you were attacked by wolves.
- 50 – 60 points – Your walk was hot and unpleasant. Should have stayed inside and played board games.
- 60 – 70 points – You had a pleasant but unremarkable hike.
- 70 – 80 points – You hiked along a beautiful river and watched a family of otters playing in the water. You feel refreshed and energized after

You feel refreshed and energized after
your time in nature.
- > 80 points - Animals stop along your path and bow. You discover a magnificent waterfall never seen before by man, and take a photograph
that ends up on the front page of National Geographic. You are one with nature.
