Deduction বা Modal কাকে বলে? কত প্রকার ও কি কি?
যখন একটি পরিস্থিতি সম্পর্কে কিছু সিদ্ধান্ত গ্রহণের প্রয়োজন হয় তখন Modal verb ব্যবহৃত হয়।
এখানে deduction বলতে একটি পরিস্থিতি সম্পর্কে প্রাপ্ত তথ্যের উপর ভিত্তি করে কোন উপসংহারে উপনীত
হওয়া বোঝায়।
Modal verbs are used where some deduction is needed for a situation.
Here deduction means drawing a conclusion about a situation based on the available
information.
Types of Modal:
There are three types of modal verbs based on their usage:
Modal Verbs for Surety
Modal Verbs for Expectation
Modal Verbs for Probability
All three types are discussed below.
যদি আপনি বর্ত মান সম্পর্কে কোন সিদ্ধান্ত গহণ করেন, আপনাকে “must” ব্যবহার করতে হবে যখন আপনি
নিশ্চিত যে কোনকিছু সত্য এবং “can’t” ব্যবহার করতে হবে যখন আপনি নিশ্চিত যে কোনকিছু সম্ভব না।
If you make any decision about the present, you have to use “must” when you are
sure something is true and have to use “can’t” when you are sure that something is
not possible.
Example:
যদি আপনি একজন Postman-কে দেখেন uniform পরে বিভিন্ন বাড়িতে চিঠি বিলি করছে, আপনি বলতে
পারেন:
- He must be a postman.
যদি আপনি বর্ত মানে এমন কিছু দেখেন যা আপনাকে অতীতে কি ঘটেছে তা সম্পর্কে একটি নির্দি ষ্ট উপসংহারে
উপনীত করে, আপনি “must have”, “must not have” ও “couldn’t have” এবং তার সাথে verb-
এর past participle রূপ ব্যবহার করবেন।
Can’t have-ও ব্যবহার করা যায় কিন্তু এটা couldn’t have-এর তু লনায় খুবই কম প্রচলিত।
If you see such thing at Present which can lead you to draw a certain conclusion about
what happened in the Past, you will use “must have”, “must not have” and “couldn’t
have” plus the verb’s past participle form.
Can’t have can also be used but it is much less common than couldn’t have.
Example:
আপনি যদি এই সিদ্ধান্তে উপনীত হন যে অতীতে কোনকিছু ঘটেছিল, আপনি ব্যবহার করবেন-
আপনি যদি এই সিদ্ধান্তে উপনীত হন যে অতীতে কোনকিছু ঘটেনি, আপনি ব্যবহার করবেন-
- Anika couldn’t have damaged the printer. She was absent in the office yesterday.
Must have এবং couldn’t have-এর ব্যবহারের পার্থক্য নিচের উদারণগুলো থেকে বোঝা যাবে:
o I can’t see him at the meeting. He must not have arrived on time.
o His flight was delayed for two hours, so he couldn’t have arrived on time.
আপনি যদি কোনকিছু ঘটবে আশা করেন যা সম্পর্কে আপনি ১০০% নিশ্চিত না, আপনি should/shouldn’t
ব্যবহার করতে পারেন সেই আশা প্রকাশ করতে।
If you expect something to happen of which you are not 100% sure, you may use
should/shouldn’t to express the expectation.
Example:
o Your program is at 10:00 am. You should get ready now. (Present)
o Can you please help him to write the letter? It should take few minutes only.
(Future)
o You have a cricket match You shouldn’t do party now. (Present)
o You are preparing yourself so well. You shouldn’t be a failure. (Future)
2. Past Expectation:
আপনি যদি আশা করেন যে, অতীতে কোনকিছু ঘটত, তবে আপনি should have/ shouldn’t have+
verb-এর past participle ব্যবহার করবেন।
If you expect something was supposed to happen in the past, you will use should
have/ shouldn’t have+ verb’s past participle.
Example:
o I sent the parcel fifteen days ago. She should have received it by now.
o He is an experienced actor. He shouldn’t have made this mistake.
যেহেতু , আপনি কোন পরামর্শ বা মতামত দিতে should/shouldn’t ব্যবহার করেন, আপনি অতীতের
ঘটনাগুলো বর্ণনা করতে এবং সেগুলো ভাল/খারাপ/ঠিক/ভু ল হিসেবে নির্দে শ করতেও should have/
shouldn’t have ব্যবহার করতে পারেন।
As you use should/shouldn’t for advising or suggesting something, you can also
use should have/ shouldn’t have to explain things of the past and to denote them as
good/bad/right/wrong.
Example:
o You should have done the course earlier because it really helped you to
improve your skills.
o You should not have gone there because it was a wrong decision.
Modal Verbs for Probability:
1. Present/Future Probability
আপনি may, might এবং could ব্যবহার করতে পারেন এমনকিছু প্রকাশ করতে যা বর্ত মানে বা ভবিষ্যতে
ঘটার সম্ভাবনা আছে।
You can use may, might and could to express things that have a probability to happen
in the present and future.
Example:
o She is in Dhanmondi now. She may come within 15 minutes. (Future)
o She is not at the office. She might be outside. (Present)
o Don’t eat that old food; it was kept outside the refrigerator. It could be
poisonous. (Present)
o They might go on a world tour this month. (Future)
সম্ভাবনা বোঝাতে “might” ব্যবহার করাই শ্রেষ্ঠ কারণ “may”-র ব্যবহার বেশ কমই দেখা যায় এবং
“could” কেবলমাত্র হাঁবোধক ক্ষেত্রে ব্যবহার করা যায়।
Using “might” is the best to denote probability because using “may” is less common
and “could” can only be used in a positive sense.
Example:
o Many students are absent today. The Principal may not/ might not like this.
o He may not/might not be a popular actor, but his acting is really good.
2. Past Probability:
আপনি যদি অতীতের কোন হ্যাঁসূচক সম্ভাবনা প্রকাশ করতে চান, তবে may have/ might have/ could
have + verb-এর past participle form ব্যবহার করতে পারেন। আবার, আপনি যদি অতীতের কোন
নাবোধক সম্ভাবনা প্রকাশ করতে চান, তবে may not have/might not have+ verb-এর past
participle form ব্যবহার করতে পারেন।
If you want to express positive probability about past you can use, may have/ might
have/ could have + verb’s past participle form. Again if you want to express
negative probability about past you can use may not have/might not have+ verb’s
past participle form.
Example:
o She is not in Dhaka. She might have gone to her hometown. (Positive)
o Hasan may have understood the work. Lisa was explaining it for a long time.
(Positive)
o She is absent at the meeting. She may not have arrived yet. (Negative)

o He did not write the write the article. He might not have understood the
topic well. (Negative)
আপনাকে মনে রাখতে হবে যে, “could have” কেবলমাত্র অতীতের কোন অসত্য অবস্থা বোঝাতে ব্যবহৃত
হয়, যা আসলে ঘটেনি।
You should keep in mind that “could have” is only used to denote unreal conditions
of the past which actually did not happen.
Example:
o Lira’s acting is really good. She could have won the contest if she had
participated. (Positive)
আপনাকে আরও মনে রাখতে হবে যে, “couldn’t have” কেবলমাত্র অতীতের যৌক্তিকভাবে অসম্ভব
কোনকিছু বোঝাতে ব্যবহৃত হয়।
You should also keep in mind that “couldn’t have” is only used to denote logically
impossible thing in the past.
Example:
o Aruba couldn’t have done the assignment. She was hospitalized then.
o He did not write the write the article. He might not have understood the
