Frozen (2013)

Produced by: Walt Disney Animation Studios

The camera pans down on a stave castle on the shores of a Scandinavian fjord surrounded by
cliffs as the Northern Lights dance across the sky. Princess Elsa of Arendelle is fast asleep that night
when her five-year-old sister Princess Anna decided to wake her up, asking Elsa to play with her. Elsa
dismissed Anna with a playful brush, before Anna asks, "Do you want to build a snowman?" to which
Elsa cheerfully agreed. The two sisters dash downstairs to the ballroom, fully awake. Elsa waved her
hands, conjuring up a snow crystal, which she then fired into the air at Anna's request. It bursts, pelting
them with snow. She then stomped her foot, coating the entire floor in ice, to add to the winter
playground. During this time of the film, it can be criticized that Anna’s character depicts innocence that
implies the mythological archetype. The happiness of Anna as she plays with her sister in the snow placed
her in danger. Snow struck Anna’s head which made the royal family gallops through the woods at a
tremendous speed. Grand Pabbie, the trolls' chief, appeared and asked Agdar if Elsa was born with or
cursed with her talent. He remarks that Anna is fortunate that she was struck in the head rather than the
heart, as a hit to the heart would have been fatal. During this time, mythological powers can be observed
as it is embodied by the trolls. These creatures served as healers who have powers and deep wisdom on
different things, that is why as if it will be evaluated these characters can be considered as “the sage” for
their archetypal characters. As the goes, a long, both of the sisters have gone through different archetypal
characters for they have experienced various life challenges. But on the general note of the story, “The
Initiation” would be the best fit to describe the archetypal situation. The main characters have taken both
of their responsibilities in a dissimilar manner. Elsa's powers grew stronger as she matures, while Anna's
life was boring yet normal. But when Elsa was unable to control her emotions, she made a violent sweep
with her left arm, causing a wall of sharp icicles to emerge around her until such time that she has made
the whole kingdom covered with snow. At that time, Queen Elsa was considered as the “scapegoat”, for
she was blamed on the tragedy that happened in the castle. While Anna’s archetypal character begun to be
the “hero”.

As soon as the incident happened Anna immediately decided to find her sister no matter what
happens, and her goal was to bring back the sun to Arendelle. It can be visualized, during this time, how
Anna took accountability on her sister’s behalf. Her initiation to go along the journey on the snowy
mountains had made her stronger as she faced different thrilling circumstances. But before that journey,
many have criticized the ability of Anna to save their castle from the tremendous snow, her ability as a
woman and a privileged princess who never had a chance to explore their whole kingdom because her
sister’s situation made their people and her fiancé at that time doubted her. But Anna proved them wrong
as she was able to go a long way to see her sister on the top of the mountain. She had pulled every inch of
her strength to be able to make her goal be achieved. Feminism in this part can be observed for after being
criticized by other people because of her gender she was able to stand tall on her decisions. Anna never
turned her back on the way with the help of Kristoff’s character she was able to bull’s eye the goal. While
as per Elsa’s situation and perspective during that time she thought that taking responsibility for what she
has done was to escape and be hidden from the people who she might hurt. Her way of evaluation of the
circumstances has shown how she coped up with the sadness and fear that she was feeling. But at the end
of the story, Elsa was able to stand up and take charge of everything. The fear that the people had set in
her mind slowly melted away as she was also able to bring back the sunshine on their castle. The whole
film depicted both of Mythological-Archetypal Approach and Feminism for the story showed magic and
culture and at the same time, it has pictured how women were able to build their character without much
assistance from other characters in the story. Also, the two sisters were able to break the hasty
generalization of the fantasy movies in which there has to be a man to lead the atmosphere of the story.
This film has proved that women or princesses can also be the main character and deliver the story so
well without their prince charming.
