Silicon has three isotopes, Silicon-28, Silicon-29 and Silicon-30, whose
percentage abundances are 92.1%, 4.70% and 3.09% respectively. The atomic
masses are 27.977 amu, 28.976 amu and 29.974 amu respectively. Write the
symbols for the three isotopes of silicon and determine the relative atomic mass.
A molecule of metaldehyde (a pesticide used for snails and slugs) contains 8 carbon
atoms, 16 hydrogen atoms, and 4 oxygen atoms. What are the molecular and empirical
formulas of metaldehyde?
C8H16O4 → C 2H 4O
Activity 3:
Answer the following questions. Show calculations. Observe the use of significant figures
for calculations and indicate the appropriate units.
Aspirin has the molecular formula C9H8O4.
3. An oxide of chromium is made up of 5.20 g chromium and 5.60 g oxygen What is the
empirical formula of the oxide?
SOLUTION:
1 molCr Cr = 0.1 The empirical formula of the

4. (Note: An oxide of nitrogen contains 63.1% oxygen and has a molar mass of 76.0
g/mol.) What is the empirical formula for this compound?
