Silicon has three isotopes, Silicon-28, Silicon-29 and Silicon-30, whose
percentage abundances are 92.1%, 4.70% and 3.09% respectively. The atomic
masses are 27.977 amu, 28.976 amu and 29.974 amu respectively. Write the
symbols for the three isotopes of silicon and determine the relative atomic mass.

Boron has two isotopes, Boron-10 and Boron-11, whose percentage abundances
are 19.8% and 80.2% respectively. The atomic masses of Boron-10 and Boron-11

LESSON 2
Activity 1:
Molecules of glucose (blood sugar) contain 6 carbon atoms, 12 hydrogen atoms, and 6
oxygen atoms. What are the molecular and empirical formulas of glucose?
 C6H12O6 → CH2O

A molecule of metaldehyde (a pesticide used for snails and slugs) contains 8 carbon
atoms, 16 hydrogen atoms, and 4 oxygen atoms. What are the molecular and empirical
formulas of metaldehyde?
 C8H16O4 → C 2H 4O

Write the empirical formula of the following compounds:

a) C6H6 = C 6H 6 → CH
b) C8H18 = C8H18 → C 4H 9
c) C2H6O2 = C 2H 6O 2 → CH3O

Activity 3:
Answer the following questions. Show calculations. Observe the use of significant figures
for calculations and indicate the appropriate units.
Aspirin has the molecular formula C9H8O4.

1. What is the % C in aspirin by mass in aspirin?

SOLUTION:
9 ×12.01
×100 %  Therefore, there is 60% of carbon by
180.17 mass in the aspirin.
= 0.59993 x 100%
= 59.993 → 60%

2. What is the % O in aspirin by mass in aspirin?

SOLUTION:
4 × 16.00  Therefore, there is 32.52% of oxygen by
×100 %
180.17 mass in the aspirin.
= 0.3552 x 100%
=35.52%

3. An oxide of chromium is made up of 5.20 g chromium and 5.60 g oxygen What is the
empirical formula of the oxide?
SOLUTION:
1 molCr Cr = 0.1  The empirical formula of the
5.20 ×
52 g /mol O = 0.35 oxide is Cr2O7
1 molO
5.60 ×
16 g / mol
4. (Note: An oxide of nitrogen contains 63.1% oxygen and has a molar mass of 76.0
g/mol.) What is the empirical formula for this compound?
SOLUTION:  The empirical
1 molO 1 m ol N N2.6O4=N1O1.5
63.1 g × 36.9 × formula of
16 g /mol 14.01 g /mol =N2O3 nitrogen oxide is
N2O3.
O=4 N=2.6

5. What is the molecular formula of the compound?

76.0
=1 N2 = 2(1) = 2 O3 = 3(1) = 3
76.0  The molecular
formula is N2O3.
