QUESTION 2:
𝑧̅
The value of lim𝑍→0 is equal to which of the given options?
𝑧
a. 0
b. 1
c. π
d. Does not exist

Correct Answer: d.

Solution:

Put, 𝑧 = 𝑥 + 𝑖𝑦 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑧̅ = 𝑥 − 𝑖𝑦

𝑧̅ 𝑥−𝑖𝑦
Now, lim𝑍→0 = lim
𝑧 (𝑥,𝑦)→(0,0) 𝑥+𝑖𝑦
Along real axis,
𝑥 − 𝑖𝑦 𝑥
= lim = lim = 1
𝑥→0 𝑥 + 𝑖𝑦 𝑥→0 𝑥
𝑦=0

Along imaginary axis,

𝑥 − 𝑖𝑦 −𝑖𝑦
= lim = lim = −1
𝑥=0 𝑥 + 𝑖𝑦 𝑦→0 𝑖𝑦
𝑦→0

The value of the limit is different along two axes.

So, the limit does not exist.

QUESTION 3:
𝑧 2 −16
Let us consider the function 𝑓(𝑧) = { 𝑎𝑡 𝑧 ≠ −4 . Which of the given statement(s)
𝑧+4
−10 𝑎𝑡 𝑧 = −4
is/are correct from the following alternatives?
a. 𝑓(𝑧) is continuous at 𝑧 = −4
b. 𝑓(𝑧) is discontinuous at 𝑧 = −4
c. 𝑓(𝑧) has a removable discontinuity at 𝑧 = −4
d. 𝑓(𝑧) has no removable discontinuity at 𝑧 = −4

Correct Answer: b,c .

Solution: Given,
𝑧 2 − 16
𝑓(𝑧) = { 𝑧 + 4 𝑎𝑡 𝑧 ≠ −4
−10 𝑎𝑡 𝑧 = −4
𝑧 2 − 16 (𝑧 − 4)(𝑧 + 4)
lim = lim = lim 𝑧 − 4 = −8 ≠ 𝑓(−4) = −10
𝑧→−4 𝑧 + 4 𝑧→−4 𝑧+4 𝑧→−4

So, the function is discontinuous and has a removable discontinuity at 𝑧 = −4.

QUESTION 4:
𝑍(1+𝑖)
Consider the function 𝑓(𝑧) = 𝑍3
, which of the following statement(s) is/are correct for the
given function?
a. 𝑓(𝑧) is continuous and differentiable at origin
b. 𝑓(𝑧) is continuous but not differentiable at origin
c. 𝑓(𝑧) is neither continuous nor differentiable at origin
d. 𝑓(𝑧) is differentiable but not continuous at origin

Correct Answer: c .

Solution:
Consider 𝑧 = 𝑥 + 𝑖𝑦
Then,
(𝑥+𝑖𝑦)(1+𝑖)
𝑓(𝑥, 𝑦) = (𝑥+𝑖𝑦)3
(1+𝑖)
⇒ 𝑓(𝑥, 𝑦) = (𝑥+𝑖𝑦)2

Now,
Along imaginary axis,
(1+𝑖) (1+𝑖)
lim 𝑥=0 (𝑥+𝑖𝑦)2 = lim𝑦→0 (𝑖𝑦)2
𝑦→0

Along real axis,

(1+𝑖) (1+𝑖)
lim𝑦=0 (𝑥+𝑖𝑦)2 = lim𝑥→0 (𝑥)2
𝑥→0

So, both the limit does not exist.

Since, the limit itself does not exists, the function is not continuous.
If a function is not continuous, it cannot be differentiable as well.

QUESTION 5:
The Harmonic Conjugate 𝑣(𝑥, 𝑦) for the function, 𝑢(𝑥, 𝑦) = 2𝑥 − 𝑥 3 + 3𝑥𝑦 2 , is
a. 𝑣(𝑥, 𝑦) = 2𝑦 − 3𝑥 2 𝑦 + 𝑦 3
b. 𝑣(𝑥, 𝑦) = 2 − 3𝑥 2 + 𝑦 3
c. 𝑣(𝑥, 𝑦) = 2𝑦 + 𝑥𝑦 + 𝑥 3
d. 𝑣(𝑥, 𝑦) = 2𝑥 − 𝑥 3 + 𝑦 3

Correct Answer: a

Solution:
we need 𝑣 such that 𝐹 = 𝑢 + 𝑖𝑣 is analytic and 𝑢𝑥 = 𝑣𝑦 and 𝑢𝑦 = −𝑣𝑥
𝜕𝑢
= 𝑢𝑥 = 2 − 3𝑥 2 + 3𝑦 2 = 𝑣𝑦
𝜕𝑥
Integrating with respect to 𝑦 we get,
𝑣 = 2𝑦 − 3𝑥 2 𝑦 + 𝑦 3 + ℎ(𝑥) (1) [ℎ(𝑥) is a function of 𝑥.]
𝜕𝑢
Also, = 𝑢𝑦 = 6𝑥𝑦 = −𝑣𝑥
𝜕𝑦

Integrating 𝑣𝑥 with respect to x we get,

𝑣 = −3𝑥 2 𝑦 + 𝑔(𝑦) (2) [𝑔(𝑦) is a function of 𝑦]
So, from 1 and 2 we get the harmonic conjugate of 𝑢(𝑥, 𝑦) is
𝑣(𝑥, 𝑦) = −3𝑥 2 𝑦 + 2𝑦 + 𝑦 3

"𝑢(𝑥, 𝑦) = 𝑥 3 − 3𝑥𝑦 2 is a harmonic function" – consider the given statement and choose
whether the statement is True or False.
a. True
b. False

Correct Answer: a,

Solution: 𝑢(𝑥, 𝑦) = 𝑥 3 − 3𝑥𝑦 2

𝜕𝑢 𝜕𝑢
Now, 𝜕𝑥
= 3𝑥 2 − 3𝑦 2 , 𝜕𝑦 = −6𝑥𝑦

𝜕2 𝑢 𝜕2 𝑢
Then, = 6𝑥 and = −6𝑥
𝜕𝑥 2 𝜕𝑦 2

𝜕2 𝑢 𝜕2 𝑢
And, + = 6𝑥 − 6𝑥 = 0
𝜕𝑥 2 𝜕𝑦 2

So, the function is Harmonic.
