Tutorial 2 – Bolted Joint in Shear and Tension

(not combined)

Layout Drawing of Bolted Joint

A mild steel UC 100 serves as a vertical support post for a welded T-Piece that is connected to the UC by six
bolts. The T-Piece has loads through two holes each are 30mm in diameter with a steel cable. The T- Piece is
required to take either (Case A) a vertical load of 270 kN OR (Case B) a horizontal load of 200 kN.

Some Data:
• Assume no distortion of the UC or T-Piece is possible.
• Assume that the T-Piece is expertly welded together in a factory and that the weld is not subject to
failure in either of these two cases.
• Analyze whether 6 off M36 Grade 8.8 bolts are suitable. You may like to develop a spreadsheet to
analyse a number of size and grade combinations
• It is not possible in this case for the two loads (Case A AND Case B) to be applied simultaneously.
• Assume a Factor of Safety of 1.2.
