HAIR – is the medium with which the cosmetologist works It must be prepared before a design can be accomplish in many
ways. The shape of the FACE,HEAD,HEIGHT and WEIGHT of the person are
The most important factors to considered in choosing a style.

PARTS OF THE HAIR

What is sectioning and why is it important?

"Sectioning is important for control especially when you are detaching a haircut," says Villa. "It gives you an
opportunity to creat consistent balance throughout the cut. Think of sectioning like cut and paste when working on your
computer. Sectioning can adjust based on the end result.

1
The most important factors to considered in choosing a style
CEPHALIC INDEX – a method of measuring the head.
MESOCEPHALIC INDEX – sometimes described as an oval head. Generally the shape of the head
Will relate to the shape of the body.
The purpose of any haircut – is to arrive at the right length of the hair for the style you
have selected . In working with your patron you must be able to make them understand the importance
of the proper cut, because once the hair is cut to the proper length you will not be able to create the looks the patrons wants. A
new style should be selected only after you have discussed with your patron,
the relationship between style and hair length.
MAINTAINING OR RETRIMMING THE STYLE, once it has been completed, it is very important the hair needs to be
retrimmed is determined by the rate of the growth of the patrons hair.

3 BASIC HEAD SHAPE

1. BRACEHECEPALIC ( Broad Head )

2. DOLICHOCEPHALIC ( Long Head )
3. MESOCEPHALIC ( intermediate b/w broad and long )

The purpose of sectioning for all haircut – is to determine the actual size of the head.
Sectioning is a very important, because the must be important part of any haircut is to determining
the distribution of hair to the TOP, the TWO SIDES, CROWN and NAPE section. SECTIONING -it is
dividing the head into uniform working panels.

SECTIONING FOR THE TOP

The area of the head covered by the frontal bone outlines the correct amount
Of hair to the parted for the top section. The small protrussions on either, side of the head, are caused
by the parital bone.

SECTIONING FOR THE CROWN ( right / left )

From the parital protrussion on either side of the head, there is a slight outline
Of the crown extending down to the occipital area ( the base of the skull ).

SECTIONING FOR THE NAPE ( right / left )

With the crown section of hair pinned out of the way, you have the right amount of the hair belongs in
the nape section, but you have not yet determined the width of the section. This can be found by placing your finger behind the
ears and feeling for the projection of
The temporal bones. By using these bones as you guide you’ll have the exact amount of hair for
the nape and it will centered exactly in the middle of the back of the head,

SECTIONING FOR THE SIDES ( right / left )

When the top crown and nape have been sectioned, the side have been outlined, you can see the division
between the top section, the crown section and the nape section.
If you have followed the sectioning accurately the sides will have an equal amount of hair and sections will be exactly the same size.

HAIR TEXTURE AS IT RELATES TO HAIR SHAPING

Texture of hair will play a major rule in your decision has to the style of cut you will
give it will also affect the technique used in cutting and the type of tool you will used to achieve the cut.
Cosmetologist usually used the term FINE, MEDIUM, and COARSE, to describe hair texture.
FINE TEXTURED HAIR – the patron with these type of hair will usually complain that the style does not hold will, and that it
is difficult to manage. Fine textured hair used to be blunt cut with shears and it should be one even length.

MEDIUM TEXTURED HAIR – a people with the style of hair can wear a slightly layer cut
(the hair become progressively shorter toward the top of the head). Generally that are considered good
for fine hair are also best for medium textured hair. However medium textured hair will hold more design and curl in the style that
will fine hair.
2
CURL TEXTURE HAIR – a layered cut is better for the style of hair, it can be cut with the razor especially if it is
extremely thick. The razor gives more teaper to the end of the hair than those shears. Usually, coarse hair is styled using a little less
curl than medium textured hair.
It is difficult to establish the definite rules regarding hair texture than are always dependable. Each head of hair is
different however really fine hair always present some problem.

COMPOSITION AS IT RELATES TO HAIR CUTTING

Composition in hair cutting – refers to the amount of hair to cut short as compared to the amount to be left long.
It also refers to the right distribution of hair as it relates to each section
( Nape, Sides, Top, Crown ) of the individual head. The head from the profile view is divided into 4 Parts; The top and two sides,
crown , and nape. The right composition ( amount ) of hair needed for each section of the head is determined, by using the bone
structure as your guide.

The face is also divided into two; The horizontal and vertical. The horizontal is divided into third section; from
hairline to the eyebrow, from eyebrow to the tip of the nose, from the tip of
The nose to the tip of the chin. The vertical section is divided also into third; from the peak of the eyebrow, to the highest point of
the checkbone,to the hinge of the jawline.

Terms

OCCIPITAL - a bone that forms the back and lower part of the skull.

TEMPORAL – it is one of two bones at the sides and base of the skull.

FRONTAL – a bone that forms a forehead.

PARIETAL – two bones that form the sides and upper parts of the skull.
