TRACING JOSE

RIZAL’S ROOTS
DOCTOR – completed his medical course in Spain and was
conferred the degree of Licentiate in Medicine by the Universidad
Central de Madrid

JOSE – chosen by his mother who was a devotee of Saint Joseph

PROTACIO – from Saint Protacio, the patron saint for June 19,
who was martyred in Milan, Italy

RIZAL – “Ricial” which means the green of young


growth or green fields

MERCADO – adopted by his great greatgrandfather which


in Spanish means market

ALONSO – old surname of his mother


PEPE - In Spanish, the letter “P” is REALONDA – used by his mother from her
pronounced as “peh” giving rise to
godmother’s surname based on the culture by that time
his nickname Pepe

• Among the earliest known ancestors
of Jose Rizal were Siang-co and Zun-
nio of Fujian, China. Their son Lam-
co migrated to the Philippines in the
late 1600s.
• Lam-co adopted the name
Domingo and married Ines de la
Rosa, the daughter of Agustin Chin-
co and Jacinta Rafaela, a Chinese
mestiza resident of the Parian.

• SATURNINA RIZAL (1850-1913)
Eldest child of the Rizal-Alonzo marriage. Married Manuel Timoteo Hidalgo
of Tanauan,Batangas.
• PACIANO RIZAL (1851-1930)
Only brother of Jose Rizal and the second child. Studied at San Jose
College in Manila; became a farmer and later a general of the Philippine
Revolution.
• NARCISA RIZAL (1852-1939)
The third child. married Antonio Lopez at Morong, Rizal; a teacher and
musician.

The fourth child. Married Silvestre Ubaldo; died in 1887 from childbirth.
• LUCIA RIZAL (1857-1919)
The fifth child. Married Matriano Herbosa.
• MARIA RIZAL (1859-1945)
The sixth child. Married Daniel Faustino Cruz of Biñan, Laguna.
• JOSE RIZAL (1861-1896)
The second son and the seventh child. He was executed by the Spaniards
on December 30,1896.

The ninth child. An epileptic, died a spinster.

• SOLEDAD RIZAL (1870-1929)
The youngest child married Pantaleon Quintero.

Rizal’s Family Home
- It is one of the distinguished stone houses in
Calamba during theSpanish times.
- It was a two-storey building, rectangular in
shape, built of adobe stones and hard-woods
and roofed with red tiles.
- During the day, it hummed with the noises of
children at play and the songs of the birds in
the garden; by night, it echoed with the dulcet
notesof family prayers.
- The Rizal family had a simple, contented and
happy life.
Childhood Years in Calamba
- Calamba was a hacienda town which
belonged to Dominican Order, which also
owned all thelands around.
- Un Recuerdo A Mi Pueblo ( In Memory of
My Town) – a poem about Rizal‘s
beloved town written by Rizal in 1876 when
he was 15 years old and was student in the
Ateneo de Manila.
Childhood Years in Calamba
- The first memory of Rizal,in his infancy,was his
happy days in the family garden when he was
three.
- Another childhood memory was the daily
Angelus prayer. By nightfall, Rizal related, his
mother gathered all the children at the house to
pray the Angelus.
