DIGITAL

LEARNING,
DIGITAL FUTURE
WHAT IS DIGITAL LEARNING?
Digital learning is any type of learning that is facilitated by
technology or by instructional practice that makes effective
use of technology.
For example, digital learning could refer to the use of
interactive boards and tablets in the classroom. It could
mean using online sites, services and programs as teaching
tools. Alternately, it could even refer to the practice of using
popular apps, social networks and communications
platforms as tools to create your own digital assignments
and agendas

It includes the application of a wide spectrum of practices

including: blended and virtual learning.
DIGITAL LEARNING IS TRANSFORMATIVE LEARNING
AND IT INVOLVES
SURFACE LEARNING:
A type of learning where the emphasis is put on
the memorisation of details without attempting
to gain understanding and to provide deeper
meaning.
STRATEGIC LEARNING
• A type of learning through which
learners adapt their learning style in
order to fit with the needs of the task.

• DEEP LEARNING
• A type of Learning where principles and
underlying meanings, facts and feelings
are integrated with previously acquired
knowledge. Rather than memorization,
it aims to provide greater
understanding and therefore a deeper
meaning
According to -
Benefits of digital learning
1. It offers collaborative
learning.
2. It provide assess to
relevant and contextual
curriculum.
3. It create challenging
and transparent
assessment. Through
feedback and reflection.
4. It create ownership,
student voice and
contribution.
5. It also create room for
creativity.
Digital learning Approach
A digital learning approach may include any of or a combination of any of the following:

adaptive learning
badging and gamification mobile learning
blended learning personalized learning
classroom technologies online learning (or e-learning)
e-textbooks open educational resources (OERs)
learning analytics technology-enhanced teaching and learning
learning objects virtual reality
DIGITAL LEARNING PRACTICE IN CLASSROOM
CAN BE REALIZE THROUGH-
Learning by sharing
Yet….

many exciting
opportunities in the
world of work. They are
the digital generation –
familiar with technology.

• Believes that :
– Using technology allows us to
think differently and perform
new tasks
– If we have access to
technology, why teach the
way we used to?
– Technology promotes
reflective teaching. What you
do, why you do it and thus
improves student learning
• Developed a model for
integrating learning with
technology – the SAMR
Model
The SAMR Model for enhancing technology
integration in the classroom

Substitution

Enhancement
Use the technology as a direct
substitution for another technology
or application

Augmentation Use the technology to enhance the

task or the application with added
instructional benefit

Modification

Transformation
Use the technology to significantly
change the task or applications use

Redefinition
The technology allows for the
creation of new tasks not possible
with the previous application
Substitution – “same-same but with
technology”
• Technology as a direct substitute to enhance a
lesson but with no functional improvement.
Using technology to replace technology tools
• Most of us start at this level and go back from
time to time
• Example
– Using Word to type an essay – this substitutes pen and
paper and enhances presentation and legibility
– Using Excel to log in data
– Using PowerPoint to present in class
– Research and find out information online
Substitution apps
• Calendar

• Diary

• Dictionary

• Word
Augumentation
• The lesson is replaced by technology that improves,
enhances and replaces the old tools and adds functional
improvements
• Examples
– Writing an essay on Word or Google docs and sending to
teacher online
– Create an assignment on Google forms and share. The task is
the same but technology enhances
– Taking quizzes on Google docs and getting results immediately
– Look for e-maps of Nigeria showing the various geographical
zones or other aspects. Move from paper maps and ensure that
the maps are integrated and the students can share their
learning with each other. This integrates social use of tools
– Use Google calendar to manage your diary
– On-line excursions on Google Earth
Modification
• This is the first step over the line between enhancing traditional
teaching and transforming the classroom.
• Common classroom tasks are being accomplished through the use
of computer technology.
• There is no need to revamp what students are doing – you are just
pushing them beyond the norm
• Examples
– Interview and record people on a particular topic
– In Mathematics, record yourself as you solve a problem
– Work collaboratively in a team and prepare a presentation that
includes voice, text and images
– Use Google Earth in Social studies to go on excursion and working
collaboratively, develop maps addressing different parts of the place
you are visiting
Redefinition
• This is where you surprise yourself as a teacher. Doing things not
possible before, new tasks previously inconceivable. New skills and
opportunities are realised – social skills, linking up with
professionals and other schools, pushing students to the edge of
technology
• This is where technology completely transforms the lesson as the
lesson cannot be held without technology
• Examples
– Design an app (coding) to address topics in class
– Turning the story into a movie, upload to a website (a deeper learning
experience to recall, comprehend and evaluate their lesson, sparking
interest in . The task is the same but there is greater engagement and
enhancement. This can be done colllaboratively, with each person
working on different aspects.
– Creating a documentary from the essay
– Class asked to collaborate and research to create an ebook embedded
with videos, images and text and uploaded to class website
Things to note
• Teachers must be comfortable with the stage of
technology, evolve their practice and use to enhance
their practice – BEST APPROACH
• The use of technology should be for learning and not
just for the experience
• The use of technology should lead to deeper learning
and STUDENT SUCCESS
• The use of technology should lead to transformational
social use of tools
• Enhance the teachers practice – continuous
assessment of practice
• Must be purposeful
•I am convinced that
best learning takes
place when the
learner takes charge.
