Course Credit: 3 units, 3hrs/week (18 weeks, 54 hours)

Title: CONDUCTING ACTION RESEARCH


Learning Outcomes:
After reading the module, you are expected to have the ability to:
1. Write the context and rationale of their proposed action research;
2. Formulate Action Research questions;
Pre – test:
1. What is the importance of writing an introduction of your academic research? Does it has
the same use when writing the context and rationale of an action research?
2. What is the main difference of an academic research and an action research?
Introduction:
In conducting research, introduction or rationale of the importance of coming up with the
study is very important to establish the need for the researcher/s in conducting a study. Action
research also needs to have introduction or sometimes called context and rationale. After which,
the research questions follow. This module will focus on how to structure the Context and
Rationale of your Action Research and how to formulate your Action Research questions.
Context and Rationale
The nature, extent and salience of the identified problem or issue are comprehensively
discussed. Different aspects of the action research setting are elaborated showing in depth and
critical analysis of the situation.
Here are some of the guide questions you need to answer in writing the context and
rationale:
1. What is the target of the department as a whole?
2. What is the performance of the school?
3. What specific competency was always the least mastered? State this in quantity.
Example: for three school years, out of fifty learners in average, there are only five who
mastered the (competency).
5. What are the practices of other schools or classes who are successful in tackling this
competency?
5. What are the effects / importance / principles of the said intervention.
6. Mention that you would like to try this in your class /school to solve your identified problem
Action Research Questions
The research question/s logically proceeds from the context of the inquiry. It clearly relates to
the identified problem /issue, and conveys the desired change or improvement.
How to structure?
Generally, this study will look into whether the use of (intervention) will help / increase / develop
/ improve / the (problem) of (target beneficiaries).
Specifically, this will answer the following questions:

What is the performance of (target beneficiaries) after the (intervention)?


Is there a significant difference between the students’ performance before and after the
intervention?
How can I help / increase / develop / improve / the (problem) of (target beneficiaries)?

Reflection:
1. What are some of the things or problems that you can see in the New Normal setting in
the educational system? Can you come up with a topic for your Action Research?
2. What do you think will be the hindrance that you will encounter in conducting your Action
Research this semester?

EVALUATION:
1. Write at least three pages of your Context and Rationale.
2. Formulate Action Research questions.
