1. DESCRIPTION OPERATIONDATA

A. Description and Operation (Ref Figure 1)

The antenna type 16-434 is a low height passive antenna designed to function
inboth communications and homing applications over the frequency range 118 MHz
to 174 MHZ.

Theantennaisdesignedasatoploadedmonopole fedviaa reactance compensation

network to enhance gain at the lower operating frequencies. Compliance with
the impedance specification is achieved using frequency dependent resistive
loading.

The antenna comprises a pressure moulded GRPshell of raked aerodynamic form,

to which is attached a stainless steel leading edge strip and a top loading
tube. The unit is closed by an aluminium alloy baseplate which supports the
single RF connector, matching circuitry and includes the six hole fixing for
airframe mounting.

2. DISASSEMBLY

The blade antenna cannot be dismantled.

3. CLEANING

Clean all parts with industrial methylated spirits. any alcohol based cleaning
solvent or recognised printed circuit board cleaning agent.

gEg: Do not use commercial blue pigmented spirits. corrosive or flammable

cleaning agents.

4. INSPECTION/CHECK

A. Inspect all metal parts for:

(1) Cleanliness
(2) Corrosion
(3) Distortion
(4) Denting
(5) Cracks

B. Make detailed inspection of:

(1) Fixing holes for elongation

(2) Baseplate for cracking. particularly around the fixing holes
(3) Connector for security, and evidence of damage to center contact and body

5. REPAIR

Electrical repairs are not possible.

Repair is limited to local restoration of the protective finish using an epoxy

gloss white paint to DTD 5555 (matt black for 16-434P4).

6. ASSEMBLY- not applicable

7. FITS AND CLEARANCES- not applicable

8. TESTING

The following test procedure requires the use of the following test equipment.

(1) Chelton Test Set QB8

(2) Flat metal ground plane 4 ft x 8 ft minimum.

Prior to each test and at intervals of not more than 30 minutes during the test,
calibrate the test equipment in accordance with the test set manual.

A. VSWRMeasurement Procedure

(1) Mount the Unit Under Test (IJUT) centrally on the ground plane which should
be situated clear of any conducting projections.

(2) Set up the test equipment in accordance with the QB8 Test Set manual.

(3) Measure the VSWRrelative to 50 ohms at frequencies over the range 118 MHz
to 174 MHz.

(4) Verify that the VSWRmeasurements do not exceed the ratio stated below.

118 to 174 MHz: not greater than 2.5:1

9. TROUBLESHOOTING
No trouble shooting is required since the unit cannot be dismantled.

10. STORAGEINSTRUCTIONS

A. When available, use the manufacturers packing materials. If these are not
available, pack the unit as follows:

(1) Fit a protective cap over the connector.

(2) Place the unit in a suitable moisture resistant pack and seal.

(3) Attach a label to the storage pack providing the following information:

(a) Unit type and serial number

(b) Date of last maintenance/overhaul check or receipt from the
manufacturer
(c) Date when unit is next to be tested
(d) Note of specific actions taken during maintenance/overhaul.

B. Storage life is unlimited. It is recommended that a unit in store be removed

and tested at a period not exceeding 3 years. A unit removed from storage,
irrespective of the period in store, must be tested before installation. Units
returned to storage must be inspected and tested in accordance with Testing
paragraph 8, and the record label revised.

11. SPECIAL TOOLS, FIXTURES AND EQUIPMENT

A. There are no special tools. fixtures or test equipment required to service this
equipment.
