Introductory Message
This Self-Learning Module (SLM) is prepared so that you, our dear learners,
can continue your studies and learn while at home. Activities, questions,
directions, exercises, and discussions are carefully stated for you to understand
each lesson.
Each SLMS is composed of different parts. Each part shall guide you step-
by-step as you discover and understand the lesson prepared for you.
Pre-tests are provided to measure your prior knowledge on lessons in each
SLM. This will tell you if you need to proceed on completing this module or if you
need to ask your facilitator or your teacher’s assistance for better understanding of
the lesson. At the end of each module, you need to answer the post-test to self-
check your learning. Answer keys are provided for each activity and test. We trust
that you will be honest in using these.
In addition to the material in the main text, Notes to the Teacher are also
provided to our facilitators and parents for strategies and reminders on how they
can best help you on your home-based learning.
Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary marks on any
part of this SLM. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercises and test.
And read the instructions carefully before performing each task.
If you have questions in using this SLM or any difficulty in answering the
tasks in this module, do not hesitate to consult your teacher or facilitator.
Thank you.

What Is It
Site Characterization
Site characterization also called subsurface
investigation or site delineation is a process which
may require the following steps: data gap analysis
detailed examination of lithology, integration of
regulatory requirements, soil, soil-gas and /or
groundwater sampling. It is also the process of
developing an understanding of the geologic,
hydrologic and engineering properties at the site
including the soil, rock, along the groundwater,
and in many cases, man –modified conditions in
the subsurface (e.g. utilities, structures, mines and
tunnels) that can impact site.
Site characterization provides information that is required for conducting
risk assessments and for designing and implementing remediation systems.

Steps:
1. Data gap analysis
2. Detailed examination of lithology
3. Integration of regulatory requirements
4. Soil, soil-gas and/or groundwater sampling

Three Phases of site characterization in establishing Classification

1. Off site characterization – an off- site investigation should take place to
gather information about the surrounding area and conduct survey from the
site’s perimeter
2. On site surveys- the purpose of on -site survey is to verify and supplement
information from the offsite characterization
3. On- going monitoring- once the site has been determined are for
commencement of other activities, perform on going monitoring to provide
continuous source of information about site conditions.
Selecting suitable variety based on site characterization
Cultural practices for characterization of cultivated rice

1. Environment- for large diverse collections encompassing varieties from

different ecosystems, use irrigated lowland with good drainage (these
provides a single common environment suitable for growing varieties,

6
including upland, lowland and deep water varieties regardless of their
normal ecosystem and adaptation

Note: Upland- on sloping land never inundated in

water

Lowland- on level ground periodically inundated,

rainfall or by irrigation water, to control weeds.

2. Soil Type –Silt clay to clay loam (best for lowland rice cultivation )
3. Rainfall- Medium-high, or irrigate (rice does not grow well under drought; it
needs either abundant rainfall or effective irrigation )

4. Season- Long duration varieties will extend into the second cropping season
(using one fixed season each year improves consistency between trials.)
Some rice varieties are short-day photoperiod sensitive. Photoperiod sensitive
accessions then remain vegetative for a prolonged period until the days shorten
again.

5. Plant density – single seedling per hill,

30x30cm between hills (use wider spacing
than common agricultural practice for
improve recording of tillering ability

Seed is an embryonic plant enclosed in a protective outer covering. The formation

of the seed is part of the process of reproduction in seed plants, the
spermatophytes, including the gymnosperm and angiosperm plants.
Selection of Seeds

7
The seeds that are used to cultivate new crops have to be selected very
carefully and of high quality. The good quality seeds can either be bought from
different sources of farmers can produce by their own. The selection of seeds is
used to improve the quality of yields.

Good harvests start with good selection.

Good quality seeds are essential for the growth of
strong and healthy crops which can resist diseases
or even drought. By removing these inferior seeds,
the farmer is able to grow stronger and healthier
seedlings
Characteristics of Good Quality Seed

1. Higher genetically purity.

2. Higher physical purity for certification.
3. Possession of good shape, size, color etc.
according to specifications of variety

4. Higher physical soundness and weight.

5. Higher germination (90 to 95% depending on
the crop)

6. Higher physiological vigor and stamina

Seed Quality- describes the potential performance of a seed lot. Trueness to

variety; presence of inert matter, seed of other crops, or weed seed, germination
percentage; vigor; appearance and freedom from disease are important aspects of
seed quality
Characteristics/attributes of quality seed

1. It must be genetically pure:

breeder/nucleus: 100% foundation
seeds:99.5 % certified seeds
varieties:98% certified hybrid seeds;

2. It should have required level of physical

purity.

The Benefits of High Quality Seeds

8
1. Because they’re the best of the bunch, more seeds will emerge, therefore
less seeds are needed, which saves you money
2. Seedlings from high quality seeds will be strong and produce uniform
plants.
3. Plants will grow faster shortening the time from planting to harvesting.
Role of Improved Seeds

1. Carrier of new technology

2. Basic tool for a secure food supply
3. The principle means to obtain crop yields in less favorable production area
4. Medium for rapid rehabilitation of agriculture after natural disasters

What’s More

Directions: Fill in the blanks with the correct word/s to complete the sentence.
Write the answer in your answer sheet.

1. ______________can be essential for growth of strong and healthy crops which

can resist diseases or even drought
2. A good quality seed must have higher _________________ vigor and stamina
3. ______________on sloping land never inundated in water
4. ______________on level ground periodically inundated, rainfall or by irrigation
