General English 7 – Speaking Test

SPEAKING TEST
(12 minutes/student) – 100 marks
Part 1: Social interaction (20 marks): 3 minutes
- The examiner greets the student, asks him/her to take a seat.
- The examiner asks for the student’s name, then asks him/her 3 – 4 questions about one of the general topics
Part 2: Solution discussion (20 marks): 4 minutes
The examiner asks the student to discuss three given options of a situation and select the best alternative.
Part 3: Topic development (60 marks): 5 minutes
Topic discussion (30 marks):
The examiner asks the student to discuss a topic with some suggestions.
Follow-up questions (30 marks):
The examiner asks the student 4 questions about the topic that he/she has discussed

1. Situation 1: You are thinking of choosing a roommate to share your rent house. There are three people
with different personalities including ‘quick-witted’, ‘sympathetic’ and ‘passionate’. Which quality
do you expect your roommate to have?
2. Situation 2: You are considering a type of media to entertain and update news. There are three options:
TV, the internet and newspaper. Which type of media do you prefer to use?
3. Situation 3: You have faced a stressful situation or a dilemma. You need to find ways to release your
tension, and there are three options you need to consider: focusing on the moment, thinking positively
and breathing deeply. Which piece of advice could be useful to your situation?
4. Situation 4: You have problems sharing a living space with your flatmate because he or she sometimes
leaves the flat untidy and dirty. You need to talk to him or her on some rules for a cleaning rota. There
are three options: dividing household chores with rota of odd days or even days, going to an online
forum to share your problems, looking for a maid for help. Which option do you think is the best?
5. Situation 5: You have difficulties understanding your friend coming from another country in
communicating. You are looking for ways to help you understand what he or she means. There are three
options: using body language to express yourselves, getting help from an interpreter and reading books
about culture differences.
6. Situation 6: In a school project about using English in true-to-life situations, you are assigned to
introduce one of the most special features of customs in your own country to a group of foreigners.
There are three options: traditional delicacies, national costumes and Vietnamese music. Which
option is your choice?
7. Situation 7: You are going to present one of the most promising parts to develop tourism in Vietnam.
Three options you need to consider are: the Southern, the Northern and the Central. Which part do

8. Situation 8: You and your family plan to go travel around Europe for some months, so you need to
