1
Lesson 1- Personal and Entrepreneurial Competencies (PECS)
Personal and Entrepreneurial Competencies

Hardworking: One of the important characteristics of a good entrepreneur is hardworking. This

means working diligently and being consistent about it. Hardworking people keep improving their
performance to produce good products and/or provide good services. He or she preferred to do
more than less.

Confident: Entrepreneurs have self-reliance in one’s ability and judgment. They exhibit self-
confidence to cope with the risks of operating their own business. Successful entrepreneur exhibits a
strong personality in dealing with different problems encountered in the business.

Disciplined: Successful entrepreneurs always stick to the plan and fight the temptation to do what is
unimportant.

Committed: Good entrepreneurs assume full responsibility over their business. They give full
commitment and solid dedication to make the business successful.

Ability to accept change: Nothing is permanent but change. Change occurs frequently. When you
own a business, you should cope with and thrive on changes. Capitalize on positive changes to
make your business grow.

Creative: An entrepreneur should be creative and innovative to stay in the business and in order to
have an edge over the other competitors.

Has the initiative: An entrepreneur takes the initiative. You must put yourself in a position where
you are responsible for the failure or success of your business. Whatever it takes you must take
action when needed and will not wait for others to tell you, especially if the problem needs your
immediate action to save the company.

Profit-oriented: An entrepreneur enters the world of business to generate profit or additional

income. The business shall become your bread and butter. Therefore, you must see to it that the
business can generate income.

Listed below are the important skills of a successful entrepreneur:

Excellent planner: Planning involves strategic thinking and goal setting to achieve objectives by
carefully maximizing all the available resources. A good entrepreneur develops and follows the steps
in the plans diligently to realize goals. A good entrepreneur knows that planning is an effective skill
only when combined with action. An excellent plan becomes excellent once undergoes different
processes and not making an outright decision just to have one. In making an excellent plan, first
you must identify the objective for you to be guided as to what type of plan will apply best, just like
having a plan of assembling desktop computer. Certainly you will not assemble the computer right
away because if you do so, you may end up doing mistakes along the way. That is why you need to
plan out by determining the components needed, the tools, place or even the person who will assist
you in doing the task. Most likely you may include what type of processor, RAM and computer
motherboard you’ll be using. The indicator that you are an excellent planner solely relies on the
outcome of the plan being implemented. If you fail, it only implies that the plan being implemented is
not an excellent plan.

Possesses people skills: This is a very important skill needed to be successful in any kind of
business. People skills refer to effective and efficient communication and establishing good
relationship to the people working in and out of your business. In day-to-day business transactions,
you need to deal with people. A well-developed interpersonal skill can make a huge difference
between success and failure of the business. The owner must communicate to his/her employee
regardless of rank so that they may feel that they are equally important in running a business.
Always bear in mind that your employee takes a lot of part in the progress or failure of the company.
A simple gesture will do to change the atmosphere and will invite positive outcome.

Sound decision maker: Successful entrepreneurs have the ability to think quickly and to make wise
decisions towards a pre-determined set of objectives. No one can deny that the ability to make wise
decisions is an important skill that an entrepreneur should possess. Sound decisions should be
based on given facts and information and lead towards the pre-determined objectives. Sound
decision can be attained through collaborative process. As entrepreneur who owns the business,
you will not rely in your own capability, instead each one will partake in providing solution to the
2
prevailing circumstance. The selected solution which undergone scrutiny and will be implemented
can now be called as sound decision. The person who will implement such is called as sound
decision maker.

1. Success Story of Tony Tan Caktiong

Tony Tan Caktiong

Known to be the man behind the country’s famous bee, Tony Tan Caktiong is another
rags-to-riches story – from owning a small ice cream franchise, to heading some of the
Philippines’ most famous food chains.
4
Born third of seven siblings, Tony Tan Caktiong was from a poor family in China who
immigrated to the Philippines in hope that they may have a better life. His family helped each
other out, establishing a restaurant business in Davao which enabled young Tony to study
Civil Engineering in the University of Santo Tomas.
When he was 22, Caktiong decided to shell out P350,000 in an ice cream parlor
franchise. He opened Cubao Ice Cream House and Quiapo Ice Cream House. As their
business becomes more and more successful, they started to hire more people to help them
manage it. Two years later, he decided to serve hamburgers, fried chicken, and spaghetti as
people began to tell him that they don’t want to eat ice cream all the time. It was then that
they decided to rebrand and change their name to “Jollibee” as it represents them as a
company, and the people that they cater to – hardworking and happy.
McDonald’s came into the picture not many years later, but they failed to take over
Jollibee’s popularity as, according to Caktiong, they don’t know the local food culture.
Filipinos have a sweet taste on food, so Jollibee decided to serve spaghetti with a sweeter
flavour. Filipinos like to smell everything they eat, which is the reason behind the “Langhap
Sarap” tagline they have been using for a while now.
As years go by, the Jollibee group grew bigger. Caktiong partnered up and
established a couple other food chains including Chowking, Red Ribbon, Greenwich, and
Delifrance. Aside from bringing Jollibee, Chowking, and Red Ribbon to other countries,
they’ve also established new food chains in China and Taiwan which suit the tastes of the
people there.
As of 2016, Tony Tan Caktiong ranked 6 th in Forbes’ Philippines’ 50 Richest. He was
also awarded the Entrepreneur of the Year and the Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the
Year in 2004.

2. Success Story of Socorro Ramos

Socorro Ramos

National Bookstore is probably one of the most visited shops in the Philippines. From
its humble beginnings as a school supplies and textbook store in Escolta, to its over 150
branches nationwide today – National Bookstore is clearly a part of every Filipino household.
All thanks to the hardwork and perseverance of Socorro Ramos, also known as Nanay
Coring.
Nanay Coring has always been in the retail industry. As a young girl, she helped her
grandmother sell fruits at the local market in their home province. Life was hard and her
mother decided to move to Manila to find better opportunities. She attended a public school
and took on many jobs during summer vacation – from wrapping bubble gum to sewing
buttons on shirts. After finishing high school, her family did not have enough money to send
her to college. She then worked as a salesgirl at a bookstore. It was there where she met her
would be husband, Jose.
They opened a stall shop in Escolta. They named it National Bookstore, after their
cash register. But things did not go uphill from there. In the 1940s, a strict censorship on
books was implemented. Nanay Coring had to put the books away and resort to selling soap,
candies, and slippers. After the war, the whole of Escolta was burned down. This did not
dampen Nanay Coring and Jose’s souls. They opened another small store. This time, they
sold the books they had previously put away and whisky.
Gathering their earnings, the couple bought more school supplies and books. They
slowly rebuilt National Bookstore. They ventured into postcards and greeting cards. They
also partnered with international publishing houses and reprinted books at lower prices.
Aside from selling products of well-known brands, National Bookstore also now
manufactures its own school supplies – Best Buy. Keeping up with the times, they have
teamed up with Kobo, a Canadian based e-book seller. National Bookstore is also visible on
social media and customers can even shop online via their website. Students, office workers,
and everyone else will find what they are looking for at National Bookstore.

5
In the words of Nanay Coring, “Work hard, very hard. There is no express elevator to
success – you have to climb the stairs.”
