PLATE NO. 1
(MEASUREMENT OF DISTANCE)
1. A 50-m tape weighs 2kg and is supported at its end points and at the 8m and 25m
marks. If a pull of 6kg is applied, determine the following:
2. Compute the normal tension which will be applied to a tape supported over two
supports in order to make the tape equal to its nominal length when supported only
at the end points. The steel tape is 30m long and weighs 0.84kg when supported
throughout its length under a standard pull of 5.6kg with the modulus of elasticity is
2x106 kg/cm2 and area of 0.06cm2.
4. The base and altitude of a triangular lot were measured to have certain probable
errors of 341.60±0.16 and 92.60±0.14, compute the probable error of the resulting
computation.
5. The following sides of a rectangle and its probable errors are 120.40±0.04 and
360.50±0.08 respectively. Compute the probable errors of the sum of the sides of the
rectangle.
6. From the following data of a precise leveling from BM1 to BM2, compute the
following:
1 41.16 6
2 41.20 4
3 41.12 3
6.1. Compute the probable weighted mean value of the difference in elevation.
6.3. Compute the probable elevation BM2, assuming it is lower than BM1 whose
elevation is 212.4m
7. The following data observed are the difference in between BM1 and BM2 by
running a line of levels over four different routes.
1 340.22 ±02
2 340.30 ±04
3 340.26 ±06
4 340.32 ±08
7.3. If the elevation of BM1 is 650.42m, what is the elevation of BM2, assuming it is
higher than BM1.
8. The following data shows the difference in elevation between A and B.
1 520.14m 1
2 520.20m 3
3 520.18m 6
4 520.24m 8
9. A baseline measured with an invar tape, and with a steel tape as follows:
571.185 571.193
571.186 571.190
571.179 571.185
571.180 571.189
571.183 571.182
9.1. What are the most probable value under each set?
A 110 2
B 98 3
C 108 4
D 120 6
E 105 4
