COMBUSTION
Combustion, also known as burning, is the basic chemical process of releasing energy from a
fuel and air mixture. Spark ignition gasoline and compression ignition diesel engines differ in
how they supply and ignite the fuel. In a spark ignition engine, the fuel is mixed with air and
then inducted into the cylinder during the intake process. After the piston compresses the fuel-
air mixture, the spark ignites it, causing combustion.
EXHAUST
The exhaust stroke is the final stroke and occurs when the exhaust valve is open and the intake
valve is closed. Piston movement evacuates exhaust gases to the atmosphere. As the piston
reaches BDC during the power stroke combustion is complete and the cylinder is filled with
exhaust gases.
