INTRODUCTION The rationale behind the introduction of this unique module is to teach the principles and to
inculcate in the students practices of professionalism, medical ethics, Islamic ethical values
especially regarding communication with patients and society, research methodology and
laws governing the practice of medicine. This is to achieve the vision and mission of Islamic
International Medical College Trust and Riphah International University as well as to
vertically integrate the various modules.
The medical profession is unique that a patient deposes his full trust his/her treating
physicians. The information provided by the patient as well as collected by the physician may
have several implications and are patients “Amanat”. The patient expects his doctor to be the
safe and trustworthy custodian of this information. The medical professional owes a higher
duty to his /her patients, often a privilege of confidentiality, as well as a duty not to abandon
them just because he or she may not be able to pay or remunerate the professional. While
discharging his duties he must consider all the ethical considerations recognized
internationally as well as he/she must have deep insight in Islamic ethical values.
The course is also designed to teach students research methodology, so that they are able to
apprehend the community needs and problems and are able to give relevant as well as
judicious solutions.
The students are also introduced to international, national and Islamic laws governing the
practice of medical profession so that they are fully aware about the legal implications of
medical practice, patient rights and jurisprudence.
