Pressure Conversion:

1. A pressure gage connected to a tank reads 500 kPa at a location where the atmospheric pressure is 94
kPa. Determine the absolute pressure in the tank.

2. The vacuum pressure of a condenser is given to be 80 kPa. If the atmospheric pressure is 98 kPa, what
is the absolute pressure in kPa, in psia, and mmHg.

3. Steam exhaust from the turbine at a back pressure of 2inch.Hg vacuum. Determine the equivalent
absolute value of this pressure express in the following units.

a. Psia: If the barometric pressure is 29.6inHg 13.56

b. KPa: If the atmospheric pressure is standard 95.55
c. Bar: If the atmospheric pressure is 754mmHg 0.74
d. kg/cm2: If the atmospheric pressure is 762Torr 0.964

Pressure Variation with Height/Depth:

1. A vertical column of water will be supported to what height in meter by standard atmospheric
pressure?

2. A hiker is carrying a barometer that measures 101.3 kPa at the base of the mountain. The barometer
reads 85.0 kPa at the top of the mountain. The average air density is 1.21 kg/m 3. Determine the height
of the mountain.

3. The barometer of a mountain hiker reads 980millibars at the beginning of a hiking trip and
790millibars at the end. Neglecting the effect of altitude on local gravitational acceleration, determine
the vertical distance climbed. Assume an average air density of 1.20 kg/m 3. Answer = 1614 m

4. The basic barometer can be used to measure the height of a building. If the barometric readings at the
top and at the bottom of a building are 730 and 755 mmHg, respectively, determine the height of the
building. Assume an average air density of 1.18 kg/m 3. Answer = 288m

5. Determine the absolute pressure exerted on a diver at 20 m below the free surface of the sea. Assume a
barometric pressure of 101 kPa and a specific gravity of 1.03 for seawater. Answer = 303.1 kPa
