WORKSHOP 9 MY ROUTINES

AFFIRMATIVE FORM.
WARM UP. SONG “Itsy Bitsy spider”:
The itsy bitsy spider
Went up the water spout
Down came the rain and
Washed the spider out
Out came the sun
And dried up all the rain
Now the itsy bitsy spider
Went up the spout again

1. EXPLANATION ABOUT AFFIRMATIVE FORM SIMPLE PRESENT

In the affirmative form, the SUBJECT (I, we, they, you, The students, You and I, etc.) is followed by the
INFINITIVE of the main verb.

EXAMPLE: I write French when in my class. Andrew and I always come here on Saturday. We like
to sing a song.

When the subject is third person singular (he, she, it, the boy, the telephone, etc.), an -s or -es - or ies
must be added to the main verb.
Example:
He speaks Spanish and English well. The secretary answers the telephone.
The bus stops here. Bob washes the car on saturday
My wife washes TV in the evening. John plays tennis every Friday afternoon
John studies French on Friday morning. The sun rises in the east.
John changes the batteries once a month.

Notes: In the 3rd. singular person (he, she, it), the following rules should be considered:

a. For verbs that end in -O, -CH, -SH, -SS, -X, or -Z we add -ES in the third person. This plural suffix
is pronounced / iz / and is one more syllable: washes
 go – goes
 catch – catches
 wash – washes
 kiss – kisses
 fix – fixes
 buzz – buzzes

b. For verbs that end in a consonant + Y, we remove the Y and add -IES.
 marry – marries
 study – studies
 carry – carriessay – says
 buy buys

Regular verbs ending in -se, -ce, -ge only add -s in the third person singular, but that suffix is pronounced
/ iz / and becomes one more syllable: rise - rises, change - changes .
The verbs have, do, and go have the following forms in the 3rd. Person singular: has, does, goes
The spelling for the verb in the third person differs depending on the ending of that verb.

The simple present tense in English is used to describe an action that is regular, true or normal.
We use the present tense:

a. For repeated or regular actions in the present time period.

 I take the train to the office.

 The train to Berlin leaves every hour.
 John sleeps eight hours every night during the week.

b. For facts.
 The President of The USA lives in The White House.
 A dog has four legs.
 We come from Switzerland.
c. For habits.

 I get up early every day.

 Carol brushes her teeth twice a day.
 They travel to their country house every weekend.

d. For things that are always / generally true.

1. It rains a lot in winter.
2. The Queen of England lives in Buckingham Palace.
3. They speak English at work.

EXPLANATION ABOUT NEGATIVE FORM.

auxiliar don´t and then the main verb. EXAMPLE: I don´t write French when in my class. Andrew

Wh-Questions in the Present Simple

Wh- questions are questions that require more information in their answers. Typical Wh- words are
what, where, when, why, who, how, how many, how much.
To create a wh-question, start with the wh-word, then add do or does, then the subject (a person or
thing that does the action), followed by the base form of the verb and only then add the rest of the
sentence.

2. Complete with there is or there are. It must used according to the singular or plural of noun.

You probably know that the choice between is vs. are depends on a noun. In most sentences, the
noun comes before the verb. But in sentences that begin with there is and there are, the noun comes
later. Example: There is a cat on the porch.

In the sentence above, cat is singular, so it requires there is.
