Assignment 4

1. Prove that any intersection of subspaces of a vector space is again a

subspace.

2. Prove that union of two subspaces is a subspace if and only if one is

contained in another.

3. Prove that two vectors are linearly dependent if and only if one is a
scalar multiple of another.

4. Prove that the set {x, sinx} is a linearly independent subset of the real
vector space of all functions from R to R.

5. Prove that the set {1, eix , e−ix } is a linearly independent subset of the
complex vector space of all functions from R to C.

6. Using the fact e is not algebraic number, observe that the set {1, e, e2 , · · · }
is an infinite linearly independent subset of R over Q.

7. Let A ∈ Mn (R) be a square lower triangular matrix with non-zero

diagonal entries. Prove that the rows of A, which are vectors in Rn ,
are linearly independent over R.

8. Let S be a set of non-zero polynomials in R[x] such that no two have

the same degree. Prove that S is linearly independent over R.

9. Prove that any spanning set of a finite dimensional vector space has a
finite spanning subset.
