PROJECT : XYZ (SAMPLE CALCULATION)

LOCATION : ANY
DESIGN CONSULTANT : AD Engineering Co. Riyadh-KSA
DEPARTMENT : ELECTRICAL
DESIGNER : BMR
DATE : FEB.12, 2019

Dear Engr. Hasan: This calculation is submitted to you for reference purposes only.
Selected Transformer Capacity = 1500 KVA (SEC standard)
Max. Demand Load Allowed by SEC on 1500 KVA = 1200 KVA (80% only)
Suppose our Max. Demand Load = 1290 KVA
So we cannot put 1290 KVA load on 1500 KVA transformer as per SEC. So extra
power of 90 KVA shall be compensated by installing 162 KVAR capacitor bank.
PF is assumed to be 80% before correction as per IEC-60364.
Target PF is selected to suit extra load of 90 KVA.
Transformer (TR-1) SAMPLE CALCULATION FOR YOU TO FOLLOW
Capacitor Bank Calculation Sheet
As per IEEE-Std.141 ( Chp.8 )
ELECTRICAL
BEFORE CORRECTION
Max. Demand
Formula PF1 S1=KVA KVAR
Load P=KW

Power = 1032.00 0.80 1290.00

2
(S1) = 1664100

(P)2 = 1065024

Q1= sqrt of (S1)2-(P)2 774.00

AFTER CORRECTION
Max. Demand
Formula PF2 S2=KVA
Load P=KW

Power = 1032.00 0.86 1200

(S2)2 = 1440000

(P)2 = 1065024

Q2= sqrt of (S2)2-(P)2 612.35

Qc = (Q1 - Q2) 162

Extra Power = 90 KVA

Minimum Capacitor Bank = 162 KVAR

Note: Saudi Electricity Co.(SEC) requires to maintain power factor of at least 85% .
