HOW TO DO THEMATIC ANALYSIS

I. Definition

A. Thematic analysis is use in analyzing qualitative data like interview transcripts

B. developed by Virginia Braun and Victoria Clarke for psychology research 

C. can be used to different kinds of research

D. data gathered were studies by the researchers and identify the same themes and

eliminate repeated topics, ideas and patterns of meaning.

II. Steps in Conducting Thematic Analysis

A. Familiarization

- getting familiar with the data we collected before we starting to analyze individual

items.

B. Coding

- getting the shorthand labels or “codes” to describe their content by highlighting

phrases or sentences

C. Generating themes

- study the codes created, identify the patterns and start working with themes

- combine several codes into a single theme. Reviewing themes


D. Reviewing Themes

- make sure that our themes are useful and accurate representations of the data.

E. Defining and naming themes

- name and define each them

F. Writing up

- write a thematic analysis

III. When to Use Thematic Analysis

A. to find out something about people’s views, opinions, knowledge, experiences or values

from a set of qualitative data

Culture can be cultivated and attain a status que in any field including education. As we
strive for excellence it is but important for teachers to equipped themselves not only the
knowledge but the arts and science of teaching as well.
However, despite the good grades’ teachers were able to acquire during their college
years, NOT all teachers are able to provide the service they ought to give in their first ten years
of teaching. This being said, implicates the quality of learners the school is turning over the
government.

IX. Interpretation, Findings and Implication

Responses upon decoding has provided for factors that enables learner to perceive their

teacher as being effective. These includes: Teachers Knowledge of Content and Pedagogy;

Teachers’ Traits; Interpersonal Relationship Skills, Values they inculcate in the learners’ mind

and their ability to function in school activities.

Teachers’ knowledge and Content involves not only the ability of the teacher to relate

the topic as viewed academically but includes his ability to discuss its usefulness as connected

to everyday living, encouraging learners to dig deeper and find meanings from each lecture.

Furthermore, the teacher has to use differentiated teaching learning skills, flexible and adaptive

to the needs of the learners and, be able to provide the needed timely feedback that

strengthens the learner’s confidence and challenges his limits on the same time. Teachers’
traits and Teacher Interpersonal Skill on the other hand, enables teacher to connect to the

different stakeholders in the learner’s life and using this connection to nurture the learners

desire to learn and includes ability to communicate, bond to friendship with respect and clear

limitations of boundaries. These traits are and knowledge are glued to values enabling the

teacher to share to learner’s life long skills, holistic values enabling learners to be reflective of

their actions. Presence of this all can be observed on the ability of the teacher to carry out

himself during school activities.

Results of this study has similarity to the works of James H. Stronge in his discussion of

the qualities of an effective teacher under Teacher as a Person. Likewise, complementing this

study is the work of Robert Walker, where the focus is on the personality traits of favorite and

memorable teachers. Similarities can also be seen on a featured article in

titled 20 Observable Characteristics Of Effective Teaching. Teachers’ knowledge in Content and

Pedagogy involves foundational knowledge, cross boundary knowledge, different teaching

strategies, feedback mechanism, strategic planning focused on outcomes the school

administration should focus on the development of the teachers towards the enhancement of

this basic skills. The same goes to the teacher’s trait and interpersonal skill that highlights on

the teacher’s fairness and ability to connect with learners. Values on the other hand which is

crucial to the teacher’s ability to influence shall be given thorough understanding before hiring.

As all this is crucial to the performance of the school operation all candidates for teaching

position shall be given a standard test that measures all this quality with greater points for

acceptance more than his education.

X. Conclusion

Qualities of an effective teacher over the years remains the same on the factor of
what learner felt towards them. Stronge (2002) states that “the positive and negative

behaviors exhibited by teachers determine, to a great extent, their effectiveness in the

classroom and, ultimately, the impact they have on student achievement.” Based on the

similarity gathered from three (3) other papers it is safe to say that effective teacher are

teachers who can make learners feel equal, part of the teaching learning process and

inspired to make better every day and able to apply the knowledge and skills they had

learned into a real-life situation. Effective teaching means transforming lives not

transforming minds. Teachers teach to develop a wholistic and life-long learners as stated in

the DepEd mission.
