COMMON LABORATORY APPARATUS
Uses of Common Laboratory Apparatus
A. GLASSWARE
Apparatus Use/Uses

It is used in distillation set-up: it connects to the lower end of the

Adapter condenser and serves to direct the distilled liquid into the receiving
flask.
It is used to hold liquid or solid samples.

Beaker

It used in quantitative chemical analysis to measure the volume of a

liquid or a gas.
Burette

It is a small tube extending into the bulb and is intended to catch some
moisture (as water) by condensation in the first bulb, and so save the
Calcium Chloride Tube calcium chloride. These tubes are seldom weighed and are usually
used as guard tubes.

It used in distillation and reflux processes and comprise of glassware.

Condenser

It is used for the separation and purification of liquids or liquid mixtures

Distilling Flask where the components have different boiling points.

It is useful to contain reactions or to hold liquid samples. They are also

Erlenmeyer Flask useful to catch filtrates.

It is used to hold liquids.

Florence Flask

6
Chemistry for Engineers (NS 111)
Chemical Safety
Laboratory Activity #1

It is used for funneling liquids from one container to another or for

Glass Funnel filtering when equipped with filter paper.

It is used for measurement of an amount of liquid.

Graduated Cylinder

It is used to suction liquids in and out of the device.

Medicine Dropper

It is used to measure out or transfer small quantities of liquid, in

Pipette volumes of milliliters (mL), microliters (μL).

It is used to store chemicals.

Reagent Bottle

It used to mix chemicals and liquids for laboratory purposes.

Stirring Rod

It is used for holding small samples or for containing small scale

Test Tube reactions.

It used to measure temperatures or temperature changes with a high

Thermometer degree of precision.

It is circular concave piece of glass used in chemistry as a surface to

evaporate a liquid, to hold solids while being weighed, for heating a
Watch Glass small amount of substance and as a cover for a beaker.

B. PORCELAIN

It is used for a range of purposes, and are particularly common

Crucible and Cover amongst chemists for the chemical analysis of various substances.

It is used for the evaporation of solutions and supernatant liquids to

produce a concentrated solution or a solid precipitate of the dissolved
Evaporating Dish substance.

It is used since ancient times to prepare ingredients or substances by

crushing and grinding them into a fine paste or powder in the
Mortar and Pestle laboratory.

It is used in laboratory applications where scratching delicate surfaces

Porcelain Spatula is undesired as well as scooping up small quantities of powder.

It is used to perform many (more than one) small scale reactions at one
Spot Plate time.

C. METAL

It is used to provide a single, continuous flame by mixing gas with air in

Bunsen Burner a controlled fashion.

It is used specifically to hold and secure a burette on a stand, so that a

Buret Clamp burette is fixed and more convenient for the experiment

It is used in the process of heating substances.

Clay Triangle

It is used for boring holes in corks or rubber stoppers to insert glass

tubing. It consists of a plated tubing with precision ground cutting
Cork Borer edges.

It is used to handle a hot crucible, evaporating dishes, flasks, small

beakers or other items which have a high temperature or contain

Crucible Tongs potentially dangerous materials which cannot be touched with bare
hands.

It is used for heating substances until they burn away.

Deflagrating Spoon

It is used to change and adjust the shape of the flame that comes from
Fish Tail or Wing Top a Bunsen burner.

It is used to hold things and is placed in an iron stand to elevate other

Iron Clamp equipment

Iron Ring It is used to support flasks or funnels upright in a stand. This is to

enable the stability of the flask or funnel while testing is being
performed.

It is used to provide support for other equipment and a means of raising

Iron Stand equipment above the work surface.

It is uses as a system of multiplying levers. It allows a heavy object to

Platform Balance be placed on a load bearing platform.

It is used for collecting pure gas samples over water.

Pneumatic Trough

Are used for two-pan balances.  The object to be weighed is placed on

Set of Weights one pan, and weights are placed on the other pan until the scale is
balanced.

It is used for scraping, transferring, or applying powders and paste-like

Stainless Spatula chemicals or treatments

It is used to clean out the bottom of a test tube. It made with a long
Test Tube Brush twisted shaft and nylon bristles. It slides easily into the test tube to
clean out any debris.

It is used to hold test tube. It is typically used when heating the test
Test Tube Holder tube, or for when caustic materials are being handled.

It is used to transfer solid chemicals in weighing.

Triangular File

It is a three legged equipment, generally used as a platform of some

Tripod sort.

It is used to incubate samples at a constant temperature over a long

Water Bath period of time.

It is used to support a container such as beaker or flask during heating.

Wire Gauze

D. WOOD AND RUBBER

It is used in laboratories to securely seal vessels. Laboratory stoppers

Cork Stopper are used not only to prevent spills, but also to trap noxious fumes or to
allow the vessel to be shaken.
It is used for plugging joints or holes in laboratory glassware and
creating a liquid-tight seal. Rubber bungs are often used with glass
Rubber Stopper containers such as test tubes, flasks, jugs, and many other pieces of
standard lab equipment.

It is used for the flow of fluids and gases. It is generally connected to

Rubber Tubing condensers which are used in the distillation process
