Jeremiah: Prophets
Jeremiah: Prophets
Prophets have existed throughout every era of God's relationship with mankind, but the Old
Testament books of the prophets address the "classical" period of prophecy — from the later
years of the divided kingdoms of Judah and Israel, throughout the time of exile, and into the
years of Israel's return from exile. The prophetic books were written from the days of Elijah
(874-853 BCE) until the time of Malachi (400 BCE).
THE MAJOR PROPECY

have eISAIAH
xISAIAH called the Prince of
Prophets, Isaiah shines above
all the other prophets of
scripture. A long-lived prophet of the 8th century BCE, Isaiah confronted a false prophet and
predicted the coming of Jesus Christi
sIsaiah’s overall theme receives its clearest statement in chapter 12: “Behold, God is my
salvation, I will trust and not be afraid” (Isaiah 12:2). This echoes the meaning of Isaiah’s name,
which means the “salvation of Yahweh.” Having read the book, one might wonder about the
strong presence of judgment that runs through the first thirty-nine chapters when the theme is
salvation.
JEREMIAH
oHe
is the author of the Book of Jeremiah and Lamentations. His
ministry lasted from 626 BCE until 587 BCE. Jeremiah preached
throughout Israel and is famous for his efforts to reform idolatrous
practices in Judah
Jeremiah, also called the "weeping prophet", was one of the major prophets of the
Hebrew Bible. According to Jewish tradition, Jeremiah authored the Book of
Jeremiah, the Books of Kings and the Book of Lamentations, with the assistance
and under the editorship of Baruch ben Neriah, his scribe and disciple.
LAMENTATIONS
• Scholarship favors Jeremiah as the author of Lamentations. The book, a
poetic work, is placed here with the major prophets in English Bibles
because of its authorship.
• The prophet Jeremiah was a witness to the death of the city of Jerusalem,
and the book of Lamentations is actually a funeral dirge that depicts the
suffering and sorrow concerning the death of Jerusalem. Even in this funeral
dirge there are lessons to be learnt and we will do so as we move from
chapter to chapter.
• EZEKIEL
Ezekiel is known for
prophesying the destruction of
Jerusalem and the eventual
restoration of the land of Israel. He was born around 622 BCE, and his
writings suggest he preached for about 22 years and was a contemporary of
Jeremiah.
Ezekiel describes his calling to be a prophet by going into great detail about his
encounter with God and four "living creatures" with four wheels that stayed beside
the creatures. For the next five years he incessantly prophesied and acted out the
destruction of Jerusalem and its temple, which was met with some opposition.
However, Ezekiel and his contemporaries like Jeremiah, another prophet who was
living in Jerusalem at that time, witnessed the fulfillment of their prophecies with
the siege of Jerusalem by the Babylonians. On the hypothesis that the "thirtieth
year" of Ezekiel 1:1 refers to Ezekiel's age, Ezekiel was fifty years old when he
had his final vision. On the basis of dates given in the Book of Ezekiel, his span of
prophecies can be calculated to have occurred over the course of about 22 years.
The last recorded prophecy of Ezekiel dates to April 570 BCE.
DANIEL
Daniel is the hero of the
biblical Book of Daniel. A noble
Jewish youth of Jerusalem, he is
taken into captivity by
Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon and serves the king and his successors
with loyalty and ability until the time of the Persian conqueror Cyrus, all the while
remaining true to the God of Israel.
Daniel is a masculine given name and a surname of Hebrew origin. It means "God
is my judge" (cf. Gabriel—"God is my strength"), and derives from two early
biblical figures, primary among them Daniel from the Book of Daniel. ... It is also
the basis for various derived given names and surnames.
