Chapter 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

Choosing a strand for upcoming senior high school students has a huge

impingement in a student’s future. The students’ choice affects their studies; the

researchers would like to help the future senior high school students to choose

what strand is the best for them. A student must include its goals and inspirations

in their decision making.

Although most of the students doesn’t have freedom to choose what they

want because of their parents, their choices should still get considered. Choosing a

strand leads to a course to take in College. Students tend to change strand

because of sudden change of choice, or the influence of their family. A sudden

change of choice does not only affect the students that shifted into different strand,

but also affects the upcoming senior high school, because most of the schools

have only limited slot per strand.

According to Boyer (1987), “in taking a course, one of the life’s major

decisions is being made. A lot of time, money, and effort will be involved. The

shape and excellence of the student’s life may rest on the result.” In choosing a

junior, senior academic track, a student should take a risk. F. Yates, Veinotte, &

Patalano (2003) define a decision as “…a commitment to a course of action that is

intended to produce a satisfying state of affairs.” The decision to make by the

students should be decided carefully as it affect many aspects.

This research will be a big help for the students who are confused on what

to take. This exploration will serve as their awareness and to help young people

find their career direction contributes directionless of youth. As observed, most of

the students that took the strand they’re not interested in are the ones that have

grades lower their expectation. Also some of the students that can’t decide on

which to take ends up choosing the one that their parent want them to take.

At first, the student thinks that it’s fine to choose anything but as time goes

by the students doesn’t take it seriously anymore. When a student loves what they

do they tend to give their best and get even more inspired but when they take

something they don’t like, they just waste our time doing things they’re not

interested into. In the end they found out that it does not meet their interest and

ended up shifting to another strand.

This study will help the students who are an upcoming senior high school

student to determine the considerations in selecting college degree, this research

is not only helpful for students but will also help the parents to guide their children

on what to take.

Background of the Study

According to Dr. Nancy T. Pascuala, a Director, Office of Student

Development Services, University of Rizal System, 1960 Philippines, “One of the

roles of guidance and counseling is to make it possible for an individual to see and

explore his or her unlimited endowed options. Vocational guidance counseling, one

of the major services of guidance and counseling is to come up with career

development program which enables guidance counselors to assist individuals to

identify and learn the skills by which they can be more effective in planning for and

in choosing jobs, in making effective transitions and adjustments to work and in

managing their own careers and career transitions effectively. He further added

that the National Career Development Association (NCDA) in the United States in

1993 noted that “Helping individuals increase self-understanding of their abilities,

interests, values and goals is a vital foundation of the career development process”

Sad to say but very few studies are made to investigate success of career

path used in the students of the Philippines, even the factors that affect the career

choice of Filipino students. This provides us with limited information on how to help

our students identify the proper career options and course choice they have to

pursue in the future. Students are not properly oriented as to what course to

choose out of their interest and skills but because of the thought that these

courses will provide jobs in the future. More so, students are opt career they think

will give better paying job in the future.

Given that the Philippines cannot provide enough jobs to sustain an educated

workforce, there are several challenges for career counseling in the Philippines

today. First, the matter of choosing a career in the Philippines is a family affair.

Filipino families firmly believe that an education is the “great equalizer.”

Approaching education as the “great equalizer” presumes that the education

system is based on a meritocracy in which ability, hard work, and “rugged

individualism” can lead to success; this, without underscoring the proper career

path that will lead them to succeed.”

Scope and Delimitation

This study covers only to the upcoming students of Senior High School in

deciding their strand and also for the Senior High School students who are still

doubting in their choosing strand in San Juan Senior High School regarding to the

students who shifted their strand and to the students that are undecided to choose
