WHAT’S IN

A. Organization Adaptability
Levels Growth Development
Reproduction Homeostasis
Movement Metabolism

B.

Reproduction - The act or process of generating a duplicate of something.

Adaptability - Capable of changing or being changed in order to fit or work better in a certain situation
or for a specific reason.
Metabolism - The chemical processes that occur in the cells of the body to convert food into energy.
Movement - It is the act of moving or the change in position.

1. ROBERT HOOKE
2. ANTON VAN LEEUWENHOEK
3. MATTHIAS SCHLEIDEN
4. THEODOR SCHWANN
5. RUDOLF VIRCHOW

B.
YEAR SCIENTIST CONTRIBUTION CELL THEORY
1665 1.Robert Hooke 2. He illustrated the
smallest complete
parts of an
organism, which he
called cells.
1674 3.Anton Van Leeuwenhoek 4. He observed tiny
living organisms in
a drop of water. He
also
discovered bacteria.
1838 5.Matthias Schleiden 6. Concluded that
all plants are
made of cells.
1839 7.Theodor Schwann 8. Concluded that 11. All living
animals are also things are
made up of cells. composed of
cells.
12. Cells are the
basic units of
structure and
function in living
things.
1855 9.Rudolf Virchow 10. State all cells 13. New cells are
come from produced from
preexisting cells existing cells.

WHAT IS IT
1. Who are the scientists involved in the early discoveries of cell? What
contributions did they make?
- Robert Hooke who discovered the cell.
- Anton van Leeuwenhoek referred to living cells called animalcules (plant & animal) after observing a
drop of pond water.
- Matthias projected plant cells are made of cells.
- Theodor Schwann he was able to determine that all animals are made of cells.
- Rudolf Virchow stated all cells come from preexisting cells.
2. What evidence led to the development of the cell theory?
 To examine thin slices of plant tissues, Robert Hooke used one of the first light microscopes. One
of these, a slice of cork.  Cork appeared to be formed of thousands of small chambers under the
microscope. Hooke called these chambers "cells" because they reminded him of the little
chambers in monasteries, which were also known as cells.
3. Which scientists directly contributed to the postulation of the cell theory?
- The scientists that directly contributed to the development of cell theory are Matthias Schleiden,
Theodor Schwann, and Rudolf Virchow.

WHAT’S MORE
A. Try On

B.Deepen Up
1. When Hooke first used the term cell, did he intend to have it apply to living
material? Explain your answer.
 Yes, he was examining a slice of cork to learn about plant tissues when he discovered the chamber-
like spaces.
2. What do you think were the evidences when Virchow postulated that all
new cells arise from existing cells?
 That was the time when the development of the compound microscope perfected its ultimate
limit of resolution by using it they able to see the cell gather resources and make copies of itself.
3. How did technology impact the development of the cell theory?
 The development of the cell hypothesis was influenced by technology such as
lenses, magnifying glasses, and microscopes. Scientists can now see living cells and
chemicals within cells thanks to the invention of light and electron microscopes.

WHAT I HAVE LEARNED

1. The scientists who gave their contributions that led to the development of the
cell theory are Matthias Schleiden, Theodor Schwann, and Rudolf Virchow.
2. The evidences that led to the development of the cell theory are when Hooke saw box-
shaped structures while looking at cork, which he called "cells" because they reminded
him of monastic cells, or rooms.
3. The three postulates of the cell theory are
 All living things are composed of cells.
 Cells are the basic units of structure and function in living things.
 New cells are produced from existing cells.
