LILAVATIBAI PODAR HIGH SCHOOL (ISC)

Atomic structure Grade: 7 Subject: Chemistry

Key concepts learnt in session 3- (to be written in the notebook)

Continuation of the last table given in session 2(make this as a fresh table in your
notebook, use both side of your notebook as it may not fit on one page)

Definition :
1. Valency- The number of electrons donated/accepted or shared during a
chemical reaction to attain stability
Note: Valency is only a number but you need to remember the charge as it will
be useful in identifying the type of ion or radical so formed and also to write
ionic formula.
2. Monovalent-elements having valency 1
3. Bivalent-elements having valency 2

4. Trivalent- elements having valency 3

5. Tetravalent-elements having valency 4
6. Ion / radical- an atom or group of atoms that gains an electric charge due to
donating or accepting of electrons
7. Cations / basic radicals-positively charged ions are called as cations /
positively charged radicals are called basic radicals

8. Anions / acidic radicals- negatively charged ions are called as anions /

negatively charged radicals are called acidic radicals
