The word SWITCHIN answers the question when is the only time you and your partner can
switch boxes in a doubles game of badminton?

Technically, you switch serving boxes when you win 2 consecutive rallies.

This might be a little bit difficult to understand; so I’ll try to explain it with an example.

Now let’s assume that you start a game at love all (0-0) and you will deliver the service. According to the
rules, you will serve from the right hand side of the court. When your score is an EVEN number, you
serve from the right hand side of the court; when your score is an ODD number, you serve from the left
hand side of the court.

LEFT SERVICE – is the left side of the court where the player serves especially when the server’s
score is an ODD number.

FAULT - A Badminton fault is simply an act or an event that ends the rally. Players also win a rally if
their opponents commit a fault.

It shall be a ‘fault’:

 if a service is not correct;

 if, in service, the shuttle:
- is caught on the net and remains suspended on its top;
- After passing over the net, is caught in the net; or
- is hit by the receiver’s partner;

RIGHT SERVICE - is the right side of the court where the player serves especially when the
server’s score is an even number.

SET - badminton match consists of 3 sets (or games). The player(s) who wins 2 sets (or games) will
be the winner of the match. However if a player(s) wins the first 2 sets, he/she will be declared the
winner of the match. The third set is not needed to be played since the player has already won 2 straight
games.

Rally Point System - A match consists of the best of three rallies, each with 21 points. The
match can last up to either two or three games. Each side who is winning a rally adds a point to its score.
At the 20-all condition in the game, the side which makes the first two points after 20 wins the rally. But
if the score reaches to 29-all, then the side scoring the 30th point wins the rally.
TOSS COIN - According to official badminton rules, a toss of a coin is used to determine who serves
first. The standard procedures are as follows: Each side picks one side of the coin (heads or tails) Umpire
(an official who watches a game or match closely to enforce the rules and arbitrate on matters arising
from the play.) tosses a coin.
