FIELD WORK NO. 7

PROFILE LEVELING

OBJECTIVES:

1. To develop the skills in getting the elevation of ground points on the

center of the roadway at equal intervals.
2. To acquire the knowledge of plotting the profile along the center line
of the road.
3. To master the art of using the precise level during fieldwork.
4. To have the confidence of working with one’s party or group and to
be fully responsible in the performance of the assigned task.

INSTRUMENTS:

1. Precise level
2. 1 leveling rod
3. tape
4. 1 set of marking pins
5. plumb bob
6. range pole
7. millimeter paper
8. French curve

ORGANIZATION OF PARTY:

1. Chief of Party (COP)

2. 1 rod man
3. 1 pole man
4. 1 Instrument man
5. 2 tape men
6. 1 Recorder

ELEMENTARY SURVEYING 41
PROCEDURE:

A. Performance of profile leveling work of a proposed roadway.

1. The professor assigns the end points of the extent of profile leveling
work. The location is preferably with considerable up and down terrain,
near a benchmark and about 500m-1000m.
2. Establish stakes at every full station along the center of the proposed
roadway say at a convenient 10m or 20m station.
3. Set-up the level on a suitable location and take the BS of BM-1 (point of known
elevation) while the rod man is holding the level exactly at BM1. Compute the
height of the instrument by using the formula: HI Elev of the po int BS .
4. The rod man now transfers to the initial point on the prescribed centerline of the
roadway and the first intermediate foresight is to be measured. Compute the
0 000

elevation of station 0+000 Elev of 0 000 HI IFS

5. Continue taking the intermediate foresights of all the full stations previously
marked as a full station within a suitable and accessible full station.
6. At the instant that the rod reading cannot be accessed from the initial set-up of
the instrument, look for a suitable turning point to guide the transfer of the
instrument. The foresight of this TP1 must be determined so as to apply it in the
formula that the height of the instrument. Elev of TP1 HI FS TP 1

7. The instrument may now be transferred to a new location so as to take the

backsight of the TP1 . Use the formula that the height of the instrument is
elevation of point plus the backsight. HITP Elev of the point BS
1

8. Follow procedures 2-7 until one has reached his assigned length of
profile leveling work.
9. Tabulate the computed values and plot the profile output of the road.
QUESTIONS AND PROBLEMS:

1. Enumerate the different use of the profile of a roadway?

Uses of profile levelling are: first for the targeted roads to acquire non sloping roads and
as much as possible to the horizon. Second, you can use profile levelling also in bridges
for balancing and centering and lastly you can use it in railroads to obtain a balanced
surface
2. How can you show that the data gathered from a profile survey is
correct and accurate?
We can show that the data gathered is correct and accurate by getting more
intermediate foresights. This will make the profile survey more accurate and we
could see it in the data gathered.

SKETCH
CONCLUSION & RECOMMENDATION

As we do the certain field work via google earth where we can use the certain topic to plot some

point specially in profile levelling. This field work via online is easy to complete because the only

thing to do is to plot the points label them as Benchmark and set up the Location of the

Instrument between BM to TP. After completion for setting up the basic plot you need to plot the

IFS and provide some legend icon to avoid confusion and later computation. We start from

North Avenue for Benchmark 1 and the last will be the Taft Avenue and after the field work was

done we go for computation as we see the altitude of TP and BM as BS and FS for our data.

This kind of field work is the same as differential levelling, but the difference is Profile levelling

has IFS that align from the location of the instrument.

I still want to do this field work outside when you can use the proper materials to visualize

everything when you record your data as completion of surveying. I only recommend when

doing this kind of field work in online you must have stable connection and your laptop can use

google earth properly because if you continuously do this FW in online and your laptop cannot

process the given action it will turn to waste. As well as the whole team must coordinate in

participating this field work and the computation team for better results. As a chieftain of this

team, I divide my members into 3 teams as: gathering data, computation and completion of the

paper this will helps the team to participate in a way the contribution of works is given in the

same manner.

Setting the location of profile leveling preferable for the said necessities with
benchmarks near about 500m to 1000m.

Build up stakes at each full station along the focal point of the proposed street.
Placing level on an appropriate location to take the back sight of the BM1, and then to
compute for the HI.

Moving to the underlying point on the recommended centerline of the street and the
main middle of the road is to be valued for IFS.
Next is to move to another area in order to take the back sight of the TP1.

Follow the steps from 2-7 until one has arrived at his relegated length of profile
leveling work.
