Building construction and material-8
What is stairs ?
• “A Stair is a system of steps by
which people and objects may
pass from one level of a
building to another.”
• A stair is to be designed to span
large vertical distance by
dividing it into smaller vertical
distances, called steps.
STAIRCASE
For constructing any stair we need to be familiar with some
terminologies (parts of stairs) and how to calculate them for
construction. As stairs construction must be with strict
dimensions, codes and safety controls, the calculation part is
the most important. Some of the basic components and
terminology of stairs are:
Threads
Risers
Stringers/Strings
Nosing Thread: the top surface of each
Landing step where we step on
Flight Riser: the vertical portion of
Winders steps to give it height, placed
Handrail directly under the front lip of
Blusters threads
Newel , etc. String: the sloped boards
supporting all the components of
Location of Stairs
• It should be so located as to provide easy access to the
occupants of the building.
• It should be so located that it is well lighted and ventilated
directly from the exterior.
• It should be so located as to have approaches convenient
and spacious.
• It public building it should be located near main entrance
and in residential building it should be placed centrally.
Technical
Terms
• The definitions of technical terms used in connection with the stairs are as follows:
1) Baluster :-
It is vertical member of wood or metal
supporting the hand rail.
2) Handrail :-
The inclined rail over the
string is known as a handrail.
3) Newel post :-
This is the vertical member which is placed at the
ends of flights to connect hand rail.
4) Soffit :-
It is the underside of a stair.
5) Waist :-
The thickness of structural slab in case of an R.C.C. stair is known as a waist.
6) Nosing :-
It is the projecting part of the tread beyond the face of the riser.
It is rounded to give good architectural effect.
7) Scotia :-
It is a moulding provided under the nosing to improve the elevation of the
step.
8) Step :-
It is a portion of stairwhich permits ascent and descent.
It is comprised of a tread and riser.
9) Tread :-
It is the upper horizontal portion of a step upon which the feet is placed
while ascending or descending.
10) Rise :-
It is the vertical distance between two successive tread faces.
11) Going :-
It is the horizontal distance between
two successive riser faces.
12) Flight :-
A series of steps without any platform, break or landing in their
direction.
13) Landing :-
It is the level platform at the top or bottom of a flight between the
floors.
14) Run :-
It is the total length of stairs in a horizontal plane, including landings.

Geometrical Stair
STRAIGHT STAIRS
• All steps lead in one direction.
• Simplest form of stair arrangement.
• It may consist of one or more flights.
• They are used when space available for

Turning Stairs
1. Quarter Turn Stairs
2. Half-Turn Stairs
3. Three Quarter Turn Stairs
In case of turning stairs ,flights take turn. The types of turning stairs are:
Stone Stairs
R.C.C. Stairs Timber Stairs
Metal Stairs
Brick Stairs
WOODEN
STAIRS
Wooden stairs are not as simple as it might look. It is
best if the far more experienced people build it. it needs
specific dimensions and measurements and
calculations. Steps for constructions are below:
Prep Work: You should check your building codes in
your countries. They will be giving you specific
dimensions and measurements that you should
apply.
Decide your Final Calculations
Make stringers
Do your string alterations
Connect the stringers
Risers and threads
• Cheap, light in weight, easy to construct & maintenance…..That’s why mostly used for
residential buildings.
• Problem occurs during fire because occupants of upper floors
cannot escape…….but if stair is constructed from good quality timber like oak, teak,
mahogany, etc. using min. thickness of 5cm, to serve the requirements of a fire-resisting
stair to a great extent.
Box
A complete boxed in stair with housed stringers on both
sides. On this stairway, the ends of each tread and riser
are installed into recessed stringer routings creating a
box appearance. There are 6 standard stair types that
are used in most practical applications. Custom
designed stairs are also available to showcase the
unique décor of your home.
Open 1 Side
One side of these stairs is closed or boxed in. The
opposite side is open with all returned end treads.
On the open side, the wall usually runs underneath
the stringer for support. These stairs are considered
to be more decorative than the box type because
the balusters will run directly into the treads.
Open 2 Sides
A decorative stair design, each tread is mitered
and open on both sides. There is not a boxed in
section anywhere on this stair type. Walls typically
run beneath both sides of this stair.
PLATFORM
Multiple sets of stairs that meet on a landing to
meet space limitations and accommodate room
layout. They are made up of 2 sets of stairs,
boxed, open, or combination.
CIRCULAR/CURVED
Any of the above designs can be made in a
curved staircase. On this type the treads are
slightly pie shaped. The shape causes the
staircase to have a radius.
