1. What has been the role of the United Nations in facilitating the emergence of new
states?

2. What are the main differences between the Covenant of the League of Nations
and the Charter of the United Nations?

3. How effective are external pressures on governments for protecting human rights
within their state frontiers?

4. Is it always necessary to obtain the explicit consent of the Security Council before
undertaking an intervention within a state?

5. 'The ideal of collective security is inconsistent with the essential character of


international society.' Discuss.

6. How does the World Trade Organization help to resolve trade disputes between
its member states?

7. Evaluate the extent to which any regional organisation other than the European
Union has promoted integration between its member states.

8. Does agreement in international organisations merely reflect the lowest common


denominator of the interests of their member states?

9. Does the Security Council need reform?

10. What is so attractive about the EU that so many states have sought to join it?

11. If NATO was established to provide a Western response to Soviet intransigence,


why did it not disappear with the ending of the Cold War?

12. 'The nature of international organisations necessarily reflects the main features of
the international society in which they have emerged'. Discuss with reference
either to the history of international organisations, or to a particular regional
grouping of states.
