- Encourage person to cough
CHAIN OF SURVIVAL  Complete
- Person is unable to speak or cough

 Identify complete obstruction


PREVENTION
 Perform abdominal thrusts until foreign body is
PRUDENT HEART LIVING expelled or victim loses consciousness
 Activate EMS
 Limit exposure to cigarette smoking  Deliver 5 back blows & 5 chest thrusts
 Lower blood pressure  Check for foreign body
 Lower blood cholesterol levels o Tongue-jaw lift
 Get exercise o Look into throat
 Control diabetes o Remove object if seen
 Eliminate obesity  Open airway
 Attempt to ventilate
MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY  Reattempt to ventilate
 Repeat steps until successful
 Air bags  Activate EMS system after approximately 1 minute

GENERAL INDOOR SAFETY  Perform abdominal thrusts until foreign body is

Observe the rise of the chest with each breath  No lawsuit if you are performing CPR to the best of
your ability.
CIRCULATION  Note: Many people will still die with CPR, you are
reducing their chance of death not eliminating it.
Infant:

 Check for brachial pulse


 If absent, begin compression
o 2 fingers on the sternum below the nipple
line
o Compress chest down ½ to 1 inch
o 30 compressions

Child:

 Check for carotid pulse


 If absent, begin compressions
o Heel of the hand on lower left of the
sternum (not the xiphoid)
o Compress chest down 1 to 1 ½ inches
o 30 conpressions

CPR

Infant:

 Open airway – look, listen, and feel


 Make seal over mouth and nose
 2 rescue breaths
 Check circulation
 Compression: 2 fingers ½ to 1 inch
 30:2 CPR
 After 2 cycles of 30:2 reassess
 Activate EMS

Child:

 Open airway – look, listen, and feel


 Pinch nose make a seal over mouth
 2 rescue breaths
 Check circulation
 Compressions: heel of the hand 1 to 1 ½ inches
 30:2 CPR
 After 20 cycles reassess
 Activate EMS

EMS ACCESS
 The sooner EMS activated, the sooner it will arrive.
 If aline, activate EMS after approximately 1 minute.
 If someone else is available, activate EMS as soon as
unresponsiveness is determined

ADVANCED LIFE SUPPORT


AUTOMATED EXTERNAL DEFIBRILLATION (AED)

 Delivers electrical shock to heart


 Restart the heart
 Can be found all over
 Follow directions on AED & those given by the AED

STOPPING THE CPR

 The patient is already resuscitated


 EMS arrives
 Rescuer is physically exhausted and cannot continue

GOOD SAMARITAN LAW


 Chance of lawsuit is low IF:
o Do what you are thought
o Keep certification up-todate
o Acting in “Good faith” and not willfully
being negligient
