PREFACE

This Self-Learning Kit (SLK) will help you to understand and become knowledgeable
in preparation of weld materials, clean surfaces and edges. This material is designed for
grade 11 and 12 students who need background and ideas on how to perform the job.

For you to start, remember to do the following tips to successfully achieve

the objects of this Self-Learning Kit: keep this material in good condition and neat
all the time; do not write any unnecessary things on its pages; use separate paper
as your answer sheet; read and follow the instructions carefully; answer the given
task before you start the lesson; take note and record points of clarification;
try to achieve at least an 80% level of the proficiency in every activity; work
diligently and honestly; answer the activities thoroughly and find out the
given description in the progress chart after having self-check of the activities.

Dealing with welding materials, clean surfaces and edges is important because
effectively cleaning a surface prior to any type of welding will ensure that any joints you
create are solid and based on a firm platform. To achieve the learning outcomes (Prepare
tools and materials) for cleaning the surface and edges of weld, this Self-Learning Kit mainly
focus on the tools and equipment needed in accordance with the job requirements.

OBJECTIVES

At the end of the lesson, with at least 80% level of proficiency you should be able

to:

1. identify the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment, tools and equipment

use for cleaning and surfacing the metal and be able to:
2. differentiate the uses and the functions of metal cleaning and surfacing tools
and equipment by classifiying them according to their categories; and
3. show appreciation of the functions of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE),
tools and equipment in metal surfacing using statement analysis.

LEARNING COMPETENCIES

1. LO3. Clean surfaces and edges.

3.1 Clean surfaces and edges based on the job requirements.

3.2 Use correct tools and equipment for cleaning surfaces and edges in
accordance with the job requirements.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW?

Do you know what are the different tools and equipment in cleaning the sur-

face and edges and the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment you need to

use? Well that’s what you’re going to learn in this material.

So, let us start!

CLEAN SURFACES AND EDGES

According to K to 12 Basic Education Program Learning Materials for grade 11

/ 12, Technical, Vocational & Livelihood, TVL – Shielded Metal Arc Welding there are

several tools and equipment you can use for cleaning and surfacing the metal before

welding and used appropriate Personal Protective Equipment.

What happens if the surface needs to be welded though, should you be as

careful with the initial preparation? Actually, you need to be even more diligent when

there are signs of surface corrosion. More so if you need to cut metal away to weld

healthy metal plates in place. By carefully preparing the surface beforehand, The

importance of cleaning the surface and edges before welding is the secret of any

successful welder.

8
Metal Cleaning and Surfacing Tools
A. Here are the tools and equipment we can use for the job.

• Chipping Hammer

We can use this tool to remove the unnecessary

metal parts in the material before weld, this tool
used also to remove welding slag from a weld
and welding spatter from along side welds.

• Steel brush or Wire brush

This manual wire brush is primarily an

abrasive implement, used for cleaning rust
and removing paint from the metal. It is also
used to clean surfaces of the metal before
welding and to create a better conductive
area for attaching electrical connections

• Power Wire Brush

A power wire brush is a tool consisting of a brush

whose bristles are made of wire, most often steel wire.
The wire brush is primarily an abrasive implement,
used for cleaning rust and removing paint. It is also
used to clean surfaces and edges of the metal.

9

• Grinding Disc

Diamond wheels are grinding wheels with

industrial diamonds bonded to the periphery. They
are used for grinding extremely hard materials such
as carbide cutting tips, gemstones or concrete.

• Polishing Disc

Polishing and buffing are finishing processes

for smoothing a workpiece’s surface using an
abrasive and a work wheel or a leather strop.

• File

A file is a tool used to remove fine amounts

of material from a workpiece. It is common in
woodworking, metalworking, and other similar
trade and hobby tasks.

10
Metal Cleaning and Surfacing Tools

B. Here is the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for the job

• Working Gloves

Work gloves are personal protective equipment

worn during work projects that cover and protect
the hands from the wrist to the fingers. Work gloves
are meant to save the user’s hands and fingers
from unnecessary wounds such as cuts, blisters,
splinters, skin punctures or heat and chemical burns.

• Safety Goggles

Goggles, or safety glasses, are forms of protective

eyewear that usually enclose or protect the area
surrounding the eye in order to prevent particulates,
water or chemicals from striking the eyes

• Safety Cover All

Protective coveralls were created to ensure
a high level of protection during work activities.
They cover or replace personal clothing and
their main purpose is to protect the worker from
chemical, biological, mechanical, thermal,
electromagnetic and electrical hazards.

• Safety Face Shield

A face shield is a device used to protect

wearer’s entire face (or part of it) from hazards.

WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED?

REMEMBER

Effectively cleaning a surface prior to any type of welding will en-

sure any joints you create are solid and based on a firm platform. You

need to clean any rough edges away, remove rust and general de-
tritus, and give your weld the maximum chance of success. Spend a lit-
tle time preparing the surface area and you will spare a heap of wast-
ed time later should the joint fail. Careful preparation helps to produce
sound welds. Bear that in mind and everything should work out well.

What’s up? Have you really learned something from what you have read?

Alright! Let us now see if you really understandood your lesson today. Are you
ready for the next activity?

Great!

Since you are now ready. start now doing the activities on the succeeding pages.
Good luck!

METAL CLEANING AND SURFACING TOOLS
Why is it important to learn the tools and equipment fo cleaning and
surfacing of the metal? As a Welder is it helpful for my future success?

Choosing the appropriate tools and equipment can make a huge difference to
the success of any surface preparation and welding operation. No matter the material
or the style of welding, it is important to work using clean base metals. These impurities
include grease, rust, paint, dirt, plastic, and other contaminants and other forms of
corrosion can make the task of welding more difficult as well as produce weaker welds.

Taking the extra time to clean a base metal surface is recommended to

create the strongest, most durable weld possible. Welders should become familiar
with the cleaning requirements of different metal and job in their choosen field.
