2019-2020 Specialist Job Description

On-calls:
 The frequency of calls might differ depending on the season and patient’s load
(especially during the weekends/public holidays).
 The subspecialty specialists will participate in the on-call Rota as directed by the
department.
 Weekends, public holidays will be equally distributed.
 In case of emergency / sick leave the backup specialist will do the call and this will be
considered in the balance. (backup rota will be done including all specialists, with
holidays and weekends being considered)
 The physician/s who will do the newborn service will do 2 full weekend rounds/ block in
addition to public holiday and will not participate in the calls in pediatrics.
 Public holidays and weekends (more than 2/ block for GP calls) will be compensated by
day off.
 In case that the specialist spends most of the time during the calls in house he/she will
be excused from the service on the following day (in agreement with the team).

Responsibilities during the call include and are not limited to:
 The on call specialist should attend the handover and will evaluate sick patients at the
beginning of the call
 Supervise the team (residents and graduates) in the pediatric wards and cyber beds,
evaluating the admissions and sick patients and report to the consultant.
 Do/supervise the procedures.
 Counsel families and patients as needed.
 Consult subspecialties and PICU.
 Discuss all the new admissions with the residents or graduates and evaluate them in a
timely manner.
 May help in admission/discharges as appropriate.
 Report to the consultant in a timely manner (on all newly admitted and sick patients)
 Run the evening rounds with or without the consultants.
 In the weekend /public holidays: in the morning the specialist do round on some
patients (after having the residents, graduates taking the maximum numbers).
 In occasions of having no graduates the specialist may be the first call on certain areas.
 The Pediatric on call consultant may assign different roles for the specialist/the whole
team based on the service need.
