1 ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

We would first like to express our special thanks to our esteemed faculty Dr.
Debabrata das, our Chairs person (Students’ Affair) Mrs. Devjani Chatterjee and
our director Dr. Kulbhushan Balooni who gave us the golden opportunity to work
on this wonderful project on the “BEST POSSIBLE TEAM COMPOSITION IN
ENGLISH PREMIER LEAGUE”. We would also like to thank our friends for helping
us through with the project.

2 INTRODUCTION

The Premier League, often referred to as the English Premier League or the EPL outside
England, is the top level of the English football league system. Contested by 20 clubs, it
operates on a system of promotion and relegation with the English Football League (EFL).
The Premier League is a corporation in which the member clubs act as shareholders.
Seasons run from August to May with each team playing 38 matches (playing all 19 other
teams both home and away). The Premier League is the most-watched sports league in the
world, broadcast in 212 territories to 643 million homes and a potential TV audience of
4.7 billion people. Nearly 60 million people now play fantasy sports, and of those 80%
play fantasy football, according to the Fantasy Sports & Gaming Association. Online
games began to pop up around 1997, led by CBS SportsLine and Yahoo, and many
providers had transitioned to free play by the turn of the century. Improved free online
games and the emergence of the smart phone prompted another growth eruption around
2008. The basic idea behind our project is to help guide managers find players fitting their
playing style(formation) and within their budget limits. Also, with ever increasing craze
for fantasy sports, this can be extended to help pick the right team for the fantasy football
players i.e., maximizing credit score(ratings) while meeting the budget constraints.

3 OBJECTIVE AND METHOD OF MODELLING

3.1 OBJECTIVE
To determine the best possible team given the formation (4-3-3), rating of players
and the budget out of 3 teams playing in the English Premier League.

This can be extended to include more teams and players from different leagues
around the world and can help guide managers determine the various players to
target for various positions. Also, with the rise in popularity of fantasy team games,
this can help in guiding the players to choose their best team within the finite
budget that is allocated to them.

3.2 METHOD OF MODELLING

Assignment modeling by considering separate models for different positions of on-
field players while dealing with budget constraints and optimizing(maximizing) the
credit score(rating) for the team has been considered for solving the problem.
Assignment modeling is a special type of linear programming problem which deals
with the allocation of the various resources to the various activities on one to one
basis. It does it in such a way that the cost or time involved in the process is
minimum and profit or sale is maximum. In our case, we will be maximizing the
credit score(rating) while following the budget constraint. The budget constraint
has been set by averaging the transfer budget of the 3 teams in consideration

3.3 ASSUMPTIONS
The diving credits are considered as the parameter for goalkeepers and total
credits for defenders, midfielders and strikers. The players of each team can
occupy their respective positions only.

Total budget is = (L+MU+MC)/ 3

where LMU and MC are the sum of prices for players of Liverpool, Manchester
United and Manchester City
LMU and MC are the total budgets for teams.

6 ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATIONS

The figure represents the final solution that we arrived at after solving the assignment
problem using the solver tool in excel. The players that have been highlighted(encircled)
have made it to our team. The selection is made on the basis of credit score maximization
which is our objective function while meeting the budget constraint obligations. The
average of the value of the players in the 3 teams helped us arrive at a budget constraint of
$690 million

For the $690 million budget, we see that we are able to put together the following team

This team is pretty close to be a all-star premier league team as anybody following the
premier league would know. Now we can arrive at different combinations using different
constraints on budgets, section wise allotment, different pool of players and other such
constraints. With the current set of constraints, we have 5 players from Liverpool, 4 from
Manchester city and 2 from Manchester United.
