CE 106 – PRINCIPLES OF REINFORCED/PRESTRESSED CONCRETE

Activity #6F: Analysis and Design for Prestressed Concrete
Name: __________________________________ Course/Yr/Block: __________

Intended Learning Outcome: To be able to check the adequacy of prestressed members.

Content/Topics: Analysis and Design for Prestressed Concrete
Directions: Solve the following problems on a clean sheet of paper. Show a complete solution and write
legibly. Use ballpens only.
Situation #1:
Pretensioned I beam with constant eccentricity. A simply supported symmetrical I beam shown in cross section in the
figure will be used on a 12m simple span. It has the following section properties:

𝐼 = 4.995𝑥109 𝑚𝑚4 𝐴𝑐 = 13,548 𝑚𝑚2 𝑟 = 210 𝑚𝑚 𝑆 = 16.387𝑥106 𝑚𝑚3 𝑤𝑜 = 3.8 𝑘𝑁/𝑚

and is to carry a superimposed dead plus live load (considered “sustained,” not short-term) of 12.5 kN/m in addition to
its own weight. The beam will be pretensioned with multiple seven-wire strands with the centroid at a constant
eccentricity of 250mm. The prestress force 𝑃𝑖 immediately after transfer will be 810kN; after time-dependent losses,
the force will reduce to 𝑃𝑒 = 605 𝑘𝑁. The specified compressive strength of the concrete 𝑓′𝑐 = 36 𝑀𝑃𝑎 , and at the
time of prestressing the strength will be 𝑓′𝑐𝑖 = 24 𝑀𝑃𝑎. Calculate the concrete flexural stresses at the midspan
section of the beam at the time of transfer, and after all losses with full service load in place.

e = 300mm

e = 250mm
e = 310mm
