What is SULO SA PAGTOO?

RATIONALE
“Si Kristo ang kahayag”
Today’s young people are facing various external and internal challenges such as depression,
emptiness, woundedness and brokenness brought by global pandemic and some other life-threatening
dilemmas that shaken and disturb their Christian faith and personal relationship with God.
Thus, SULO SA PAGTOO is a concrete response and action of Diocesan Youth Apostolate (DYA)
through the Education and Prayer Ministry (EdPra) of Sacred Heart of Jesus Quasi-Parish in order to
strengthen the spiritual and faith journey of all young Catholics in every GKK under its parish territory
in the context of new normal. In the safety and comfort of every home, online videos and downloadable
formation copies are available and accessible.
SULO (torch) is a term that elucidates light carried by each baptized young catholic who
acquired faith in the sacrament of baptism. Because of COVID-19 Global Pandemic, many young people
wish and yearn to encounter Jesus who said that “whoever follows Him will never walk in darkness but
will have the light of life.” (Jn 9:5). Indeed, Jesus is the light of the world we all need. As young Catholic
Christians of today, we have the responsibility to always “carry the torch of our faith” so that we will
not be misled. This “torch of faith” will give us an assurance, direction and strength to face every battle
of our lives.
Moreover, like the parable of the prodigal son, the father serves as the “torch” that welcomes
back his son and brings back his true identity. In the parable of the sower, may the seeds sow sprout in
the good soil to bear good fruits.
This youth formation and catechesis aims to answer the thirst and hungry to re-discover, re-
encounter and re-experience Jesus in the ordinariness of their lives. The simplified sessions of youth
formation and catechesis will serve as a way to educate young people on Christian faith and doctrine
imparted in an arranged and systematic topic from reliable sources and references. Topics may include
social and moral issues, catechesis and doctrine from the Catholic Church.
Praying with deep faith that through the series of youth formation and catechesis, young people
(young missionary disciples and servants of the Lord) will never lose the saltiness to experience the
beauty of life and reaffirm the faith gifted by God; that no one lights a lamp and puts it under a bowl
but instead, puts it in a lampstand where it gives light for everyone in the house. (Mt. 5:13-14

2. Assign someone to read loudly the Bible passage;

Lider: ANG PAGBASA SA SANTOS NGA EBANGHELYO, SUMALA SA PAGSAYSAY NI SAN LUKAS
Tanan: HIMAYAON, IKAW O GINOO!
(Luke 19:1-10)
Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through. 2 A man was there by the name of Zacchaeus; he
was a chief tax collector and was wealthy. 3 He wanted to see who Jesus was, but because he was
short he could not see over the crowd. 4 So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig tree to see
him, since Jesus was coming that way. 5 When Jesus reached the spot, he looked up and said to
him, “Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today.” 6 So he came down at
once and welcomed him gladly. 7 All the people saw this and began to mutter, “He has gone to be
the guest of a sinner.” 8 But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord, “Look, Lord! Here and now I
give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay
back four times the amount.” 9 Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because
this man, too, is a son of Abraham. 10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”
Lider: ANG SANTOS NGA EBANGHELYO SA ATONG GINOO

people. We have gift received (our personality and character) and meant to be
shared.

3. Jesus enables everyone, of whatever personality type, to arise and grow. He calls
everyone to follow him: those who are person-oriented as well as those who are
activity-driven.

4. As you received gift of personality, acknowledge it and thank the Lord for that
unique gift you have received and share it for His greater glory of God.

(Luke 18: 18-27)
18 A certain ruler asked him, “Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” 19 “Why do
you call me good?” Jesus answered. “No one is good—except God alone. 20 You know the
commandments: ‘You shall not commit adultery, you shall not murder, you shall not steal, you shall
not give false testimony, honor your father and mother.’ [a]” 21 “All these I have kept since I was a boy,”
he said. 22 When Jesus heard this, he said to him, “You still lack one thing. Sell everything you have
and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” 23 When he heard
this, he became very sad, because he was very wealthy. 24 Jesus looked at him and said, “How hard it
is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God! 25 Indeed, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of
a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.” 26 Those who heard this asked,
“Who then can be saved?” 27 Jesus replied, “What is impossible with man is possible with God.”

ug mapalawman pa ang mao nga session.)

1. Jesus came to bring the Good News. He preached and lived his joyful message,
showing through words and deeds his top Values.

2. A List of Christian Values:

Generosity – This is the core Christian value of being kind and unselfish, especially
with our money and time. "The generous will themselves be blessed, for they share
their food with the poor."
Proverbs 22:9

Courage– The value is characterized by boldness and confidence. It’s the opposite of
fear. "Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do
not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go." Joshua
1:9

Love – Love is a fundamental characteristic of who God is and it’s a value that is to
describe His children as well. "We love because he first loved us." – 1 John 4:19
Respect – A Christian value is to be conscious that God has created all people in His
image. As a response, we show respect to all. "Show proper respect to everyone,
love the family of believers, fear God, honor the emperor."
1 Peter 2:17

Hope – The value of hope is confident expectation. It’s a firm assurance in God.
"There is surely a future hope for you, and your hope will not be cut off."
Proverbs 23:18

Peace – There are many aspects of this Christian value mentioned in the Bible. It
refers to rest and tranquility and ultimately, peace is a gift from God. "Let us
therefore make every effort to do what leads to peace and to mutual edification."
Romans 14:19

In the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit

Prayer to St. John Paul II

Oh, St. John Paul, from the window of heaven, grant us your blessing! Bless the church
that you loved and served and guided, courageously leading it along the paths of the
world in order to bring Jesus to everyone and everyone to Jesus. Bless the young, who
were your great passion. Help them dream again, help them look up high again to
find the light that illuminates the paths of life here on earth.

May you bless families, bless each family! You warned of Satan's assault against this
precious and indispensable divine spark that God lit on earth. St. John Paul, with
your prayer, may you protect the family and every life that blossoms from the
family.

Pray for the whole world, which is still marked by tensions, wars and injustice. You
tackled war by invoking dialogue and planting the seeds of love: pray for us so that
we may be tireless sowers of peace.

Oh St. John Paul, from heaven's window, where we see you next to Mary, send
God's blessing down upon us all. Amen.

Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he
dismissed the crowd. 23 After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. Later
that night, he was there alone, 24 and the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by
the waves because the wind was against it. 25 Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the
lake. 26 When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,” they said, and
cried out in fear. 27 But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.” 28 “Lord, if
it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.” 29 “Come,” he said.
Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. 30 But when he saw
the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!” 31 Immediately Jesus
reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?”
32 33
And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. Then those who were in the boat
worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”

VIII- IDEAS TO REMEMBER

(Ang facilitator/s pwede mudugang pa ug supplemental points kabahin sa session topic. Pwede
usab magpakita ug inspirational video kabahin sa mao nga session topic aron mas mapasabot
ug mapalawman pa ang mao nga session.)

1. Jesus knew that only through pain and suffering, in fact, through failure itself,
could the glory and joy of success be attained. Likewise, Simon Peter had to go
through the shameful experience of sinking right in front of Jesus to reach the glory
of holiness.

2. Jesus encourages us to take courage and arise. We must not be afraid to take a
step forward, out of the boat and into the storm. As long as we keep our focus on
him, and in him set the foundation for our faith, we will never sink. And even if we
do sink, he is just beside us, ready to lift us out of the water.

3. In life, we must take challenges positively. Step out of your comfort zone and
security and begin to take risk. Do not be afraid to fail. Learn to rise again. Fight the
battles of life with God.
