Laboratory Exercise 1

Familiarization with PROTO Circuit Simulator

Introduction
PROTO is a real-time electronic circuit simulator application for android. The user
can setup a circuit with various components and simulate behavior of the electric
circuit.
During simulation, the user can check voltages, currents and many other variables.
The user can also check signals on multichannel oscilloscope and tune the circuit in
real time. Also, PROTO can be used as logic circuit simulator and perform digital
electronic analysis.
Features:
• Animations of voltage values and current flows
• Adjusts circuit parameters (like voltage, current and other)
• Four-channel oscilloscope
• Single play/pause button to control simulation
• Copy electronic components
• Learn about electronic circuits by examples in app

Components:
• DC, AC, Square, Triangle, Sawtooth, Pulse, Noise voltage source
• Current source
• Resistor
• Potentiometer
• Capacitor
• Inductor
• Transformer
• Diode (rectifying diode, LED, Zener, Schottky)
• Transistor (NPN, PNP, N and P channel Mosfet)
• Switches (SPST, Relay)

1
• Bulb
• Operational amplifier
• Timer 555 (NE555)
• Digital Gates (AND, NAND, OR, XOR, NOR, Inverter)
• Voltmeter
• Ammeter
• Fuse
• Photoresistor (uses phone light sensor)
• Analog-to-digital converter (ADC)
• Accelerometer (uses phone accelerometer sensor)
• FM source
• Logic Input
• Memristor

Objectives
1. To become familiar with PROTO circuit simulator for electrical circuits on a
mobile phone or computer;
2. To install PROTO circuit simulator;
3. To create new project and add circuit components; and
4. To perform circuit simulation and measure parameters of certain
components.

Materials
• Android phone / Laptop / Desktop
• PROTO Application

2
To use the application on a PC or MAC, go to https://www.bluestacks.com/ to
download Bluestacks, an Android Emulator software. After installation of Bluestacks,
perform the Procedure below using your PC or MAC.

Procedure
1. Go to Play Store and Install “PROTO – circuit simulator (Early Access)” on
your android device. Once installed, open the app.

3
2. Click the Simulate button on the lower right corner. This will lead you to a new
circuit board.

4
3. Click the “+” button on the lower right corner to show all available circuit
components like voltage sources, resistors, capacitors, inductors, lamps; and
measuring devices such as ammeters and voltmeter s.

To hide the circuit components menu, click the “-“ button.

5
4. Click a particular circuit component to add it on the circuit board. In this
example, a DC voltage source was added.

5. Move the circuit component anywhere on the circuit board by clicking it once.
Its color must turn into cyan—it means that the circuit component is selected
and can be moved and can be edited.

6
6. Click the “+” and choose from the circuit components panel to add more circuit
components.

7
7. To rotate a circuit component, click on that component to select (it must turn
into cyan). Then click the rotate button on the bottom left corner of the screen.

8
8. To change the value of a circuit component, click on that circuit component
(remember it must turn into cyan). Now, click the edit button on the left side.

A wheel will appear on the lower right corner just beside the “+” button. Steer
the wheel clockwise to increase the value, or do it counterclockwise to
decrease the value.

To input the desired value manually, click the center of the wheel. A text box
will appear and type in the desired value.

9
9. To connect the circuit components with wires, click on the junction terminal of
a circuit component. In this example, the positive terminal of the DC voltage
source was selected. A big blue circle must appear on the junction terminal.

Next, click on the junction terminal of another circuit component to connect. In

this example, one junction terminal of R1 was connected to the positive
terminal of the DC voltage source.

Repeat this process until everything is connected as desired.

10
When the circuit is closed, the application will automatically run the circuit.

The moving yellow dots on the circuit represent conventional current flow.

11
10. To delete a circuit component or a line of wire, click on that component or wire
(it must turn into cyan) to select, and then click the delete button on the lower
right corner.

12
11. To measure the circuit parameters like current and voltage anywhere on the
circuit, add ammeter and voltmeter respectively.

13
Another way to look up on the value of current through and voltage across a
load, click on that particular component and a set of values will appear on
the top left corner.

14
12. To pause the simulation, click the pause button on the lower left corner.

To run again, click the play button.

15
13. To save the project, click the “back” button of your phone. The Workspace
panel will appear. The project can be renamed, duplicated, and deleted.
