Dr. Subhas Mukhopadhyay.
In the year 1955, a 24 year old Subhas received his MBBS degree from National Medical
College, Calcutta while standing first in Gynecology. Later in 1958 he did his PhD in
reproductive physiology from Calcutta University and went on to receive another PhD
from University of Edinburgh in 1967. But his greatest feat was yet to follow:

The then WestBengal Government was apparently displeased with Dr. Mukhopadhyay as
he published his claims without prior permission from the State Government. As a result of
which they setup an enquiry commission to find the truth behind this doctor's claim. The
committee was presided by a radiophysicist ( I mean, can you believe the level of
nepotism? A radiophysicist close to the government, to evaluate the work of a genius
physician). The committee who did not have the guts to dream about such ground
breaking research gave its verdict that the procedure adopted is improbable and labelled
Dr. Mukhopadhyay as a fraud!
The genius who could have been a nobel laurete, a doctor, every aspiring physician would
want to be, was now denied the permission to publish his findings and prevented to attend
foreign conferences. And guess what more? He was then transferred to the Institute of
Ophthalmology which would deny him any opportunity of research in the field of assisted
reproduction.
This extremely talented Indian Doctor who did not gave up in the scarcity of lab
equipment and would not let thousands of trying parents in future to give up on their
dream of a baby, finally gave up. The bureaucratic harassment and ostracization from a
jealous medical fraternity had taken its toll. Dr. Mukhopadhyay committed suicide in his
Calcutta residence on 19th June, 1981.

Murlidhar Devidas Amte, popularly known as Baba Amte.
Baba Amte was an Indian social worker and social activist known particularly for his
work for the rehabilitation and empowerment of poor people suffering
from Leprosy.
Trained in law, he developed a successful legal practice at Wardha. He soon got
involved in the Indian struggle for freedom from the British Raj, and started acting as
a defence lawyer for leaders of the Indian freedom movement whom the British
authorities had imprisoned in the 1942 Quit India movement.
He followed Gandhism, including yarn spinning using a charkha and wearing khadi.
When Gandhi got to know that he has saved a girl from British soldiers who were
trying to rape her, Gandhi gave him the name – Abhay Sadhak (Fearless
Follower).
In those days, leprosy was associated with social stigma and the society disowned
people suffering from leprosy. There was also a widespread misbelief that leprosy was
contagious. Amte strove to dispel the misbelief and once allowed bacilli from a leprosy
patient to be injected into him while participating in an experimental test aimed at
proving that leprosy was not contagious.
Amte founded three ashrams for treatment and rehabilitation of leprosy patients,
disabled people, and people from marginalised sections of the society in Maharashtra,
India. On 15 August 1949, he started a hospital in Anandvan under a tree. In 1973,

I would nominate the name of the man who prepared the first comprehensive draft of the
Indian Constitution.
He is Sir Benegal Narsing Rau (1887 1953).
Shri Rau was appointed as the Constitutional Adviser to the Constituent Assembly in
formulating the Indian Constitution. He was given the charge of creating the general
structure of its democratic framework. He prepared the initial draft in February
1948. That’s right B N Rau prepared our constitution’s first draft, though he was not a
member of the Assembly.
There already was a Draft in existence when the Drafting Committee in the Constituent
Assembly was set up.
This draft by Rau was debated, revised and finally adopted by the Constituent Assembly of
India on 26 November 1949. The setting up the Drafting Committee, under the
chairmanship of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar, declared that it was being set up to "Scrutinise the
Draft of the text of the Constitution prepared by the Constitutional Adviser giving effect
to the decisions taken already in the Assembly and including all matters ancillary thereto
or which have to be provided in such a Constitution, and to submit to the Assembly for
consideration the text of the Draft Constitution as revised by the Committee." Dr.

Nehru, Vallabhbhai Patel and Pattabi Sitaramiah) Committee. Over the course of three
years, the committee negotiated with Potti Sriramulu, but they could not reach a consensus
regarding the retention of Madras as the capital for the new Telugu speaking state. While
the JVP Committee did not accept Madras to be given to the new Telugu speaking state,
Potti Sriramulu did not want a Telugu speaking state without Madras.
Finally in the last months of 1952, Potti Sriramulu started a fast unto death in
Madras demanding that the separate statehood of Andhra Pradesh be granted. Due to the
continued demand of Madras by Potti Sriramulu, the committee had stalled the process of
granting separate statehood and did not give in to his demands, and therefore did not give
too much of importance to his fast, which even the Andhra Congress had disapproved of.
Nevertheless, his protest had a huge public support and obtained a lot of public attention.
When on the 58th day of his fast, on December 15th 1952 he died fasting unto
death, he became only the second Indian after Jatin Das to have actually fasted unto
death, thus sacrificing his life for the cause of separate statehood for the Telugu speaking
people. All hell broke loose in the region riots, destruction of public property, uprisings,
protests, stone pelting and what not!
The Central Government was under so much pressure, that within three days, it had
approved the move for the creation of a separate Andhra state separating the
Telugu people from the Madras Presidency, provided they give up the hope of
retaining Madras. But the same committee did not approve the creation of other states.
Nevertheless, Potti Sriramulu's movement and sacrifice had given enough momentum to
inspire the other linguistic groups across India to up their anti in demanding separate
statehood for them, and finally the States Reorganization Committee was formed in 1955.

The Telugu speaking regions of Hyderabad state merged with Andhra state thus
forming the state of Andhra Pradesh. The regions which had come from
Hyderabad state again split from Andhra Pradesh in 2014, and is now a separate state
