UNDERSTANDING THE SELF MODULE 3

PART 1;

The concept of anthropology about self is that it is the study of people past and present. It
Focuses on understanding human condition in its cultural aspect.

Concerned with understanding how human evolved and how they differ from one another.

According to the module the definition of elf in modern anthropology is that self is a Unit but
unitary . Prof. Katherine Ewing described self as encompassing “physical organism, possessing
psychological functioning and social attributes.”

The Origins of Self explores the role that selfh. The self of which we are aware is not
something innate within us, it is a model of our self produced as a response to the models of us
offered to us by other people.

Edwardes argues that other awareness is a relatively early evolutionary development, present
throughout the primate clade and perhaps beyond, but self-awareness is a product of the
sharing of social models, something only humans appear to do. The self of which we are aware is
not something innate within us, it is a model of our self produced as a response to the models of
us offered to us by other people. Edwardes proposes that human construction of selfhood
involves seven different types of self. All but one of them are internally generated models, and
the only non-model, the actual self, is completely hidden from conscious awareness. We rely on
others to tell us about our self, and even to let us know we are a self. Developed in relation to a
range of subject areas – linguistics, anthropology, genomics and cognition, as well as socio-
cultural theory – The Origins of Self is of particular interest to students and researchers
studying the origins of language, human origins in general, and the cognitive differences
between human and other animal psychologies.

PART 2;

According to Joseph LeDoux thee are 2 ASPECTS OF THE SELF

First is the Implicit self – this is the self that you are consciously aware of.

Second is the Explicit self – this is the self that is not immediately available to the
consciousness.

Implicit self-esteem refers to a person's disposition to evaluate themselves in a spontaneous, automatic,

or unconscious manner. It contrasts with explicit self-esteem, which entails more conscious and reflective
self-evaluation. Both explicit and implicit self-esteem are constituents of self-esteem.

Based on him,

“The self is not static, it is added to and subtracted from genetic maturation, learning,
forgetting, stress, ageing, and disease.”

PART 3; VENN DIAGRAM

DIFFERENCES
Independent Construct (Individualistic Culture)
 Internal Attributes
 values and skills
 the way in which a person thinks about and defines the self.
 Individualistic Culture
 more focused on themselves and on influencing others.

Interdependent Construct (Collectivist Culture)

 The essential connection between individual to other people.

 Collectivist Culture
 view their close relationships, social roles, and group memberships as central to their sense of self.
 likely to be conscious of others and their relationships and to adjust their behavior to
accommodate others.

SIMILARITIES
 BOTH WAYS ON HOW SELF IS CONSTRUCTED

PART 4; LEARNING BANK:

I learned that anthropology provides the possibility to study every aspect of human existence.
it is the window into the unknown. anthropology provides the answer to our questions about
ourselves, our past, present and future. anthropology helps to connect everyone from around
the globe.

One of the key points I’ve remembered is

The Origins of Self explores the role that selfhood plays in defining human society, and each
human individual in that society. ... The self of which we are aware is not something innate within
us, it is a model of our self produced as a response to the models of us offered to us by other
people.

Social anthropology plays a central role in an era when global understanding and recognition of diverse ways
of seeing the world are of critical social, political and economic importance. Social anthropology uses practical
methods to investigate philosophical problems about the nature of human life in society.

Anthropology is the study of what makes us human. Anthropologists take a broad approach to
understanding the many different aspects of the human experience, which we call holism. They consider the
past, through archaeology, to see how human groups lived hundreds or thousands of years ago and what was
important to them.

I learned 2 ASPECTS OF THE SELF of Joseph LeDoux

First is the Implicit self – this is the self that you are consciously aware of.
Second is the Explicit self – this is the self that is not immediately available to the
consciousness.

Being self-aware can help you to plan development and make career decisions that are right for
you. It's important to know what you want from your career, what gives you fulfilment and the type of
environments or work cultures you will thrive in.
